Need an energy drink to complement your workout? Reign has everything you need, with a healthy serving of caffeine and nutrients to keep you going through those reps.

But what exactly is in a can of Reign, and which ingredients actually work?

A regular 16 fl. oz can of Reign contains 300mg of caffeine, 0 to 10 calories (depending on the flavor), and is sugar-free, along with a side of vitamins, BCAAs and CoQ10. It also contains the electrolytes sodium and potassium so you can replenish your bodily fluids faster after workouts.

To find out exactly what each of these ingredients does, join me for a deep dive into the ingredients of Reign.

How Many Calories Are in Reign?

Depending on which flavor of Reign you get, you can have anywhere between 0 to 10 calories per 16 fl.oz can of Reign Energy.

The low-calorie count means you don’t have to worry too much about fitting Reign into your meal plans, which gives you a lot more flexibility compared to other sugary energy drinks.

For reference, the maximum daily recommended calorie intake for healthy adults is between 2000 to 2400 calories for women and 2400 to 3000 calories for men.

So while a can of Reign won’t greatly affect your diet or calorie intake, it also means that you’re not exactly getting much energy from the drink itself either.

Hence, try not to hit the gym with only a can of Reign. Remember, energy drinks are great as a pick-me-up, but nothing can beat an actual meal in terms of actually giving you sustainable energy.

How Much Caffeine Does Reign Have?

Every 16 fl.oz can of Reign contains 300mg of caffeine, which is quite a lot.

With 300mg of caffeine, Reign shares with Bang and canned G Fuel the dubious honor of being among the strongest energy drinks available on the market.

It’s sure to give you a massive boost, but it may also give you a nasty headache if you happen to be sensitive to caffeine.

Of course, if you’re used to caffeine and have a high metabolism, 300mg of caffeine may just be the right amount for you to feel the effects of caffeine.

But, no matter your metabolism, you should definitely not have too many cans of Reign or any caffeinated beverage in a day.

The FDA recommends you limit your daily caffeine intake to a maximum of 400mg, as any more might lead to some notable side effects, namely:

  • Insomnia
  • Anxiousness
  • Increased Heart Rate
  • Digestive Issues
  • Nausea
  • Headaches

Therefore, try and keep your caffeine intake to a tolerable minimum and not stack too many caffeinated beverages in one go, especially when you have a can of Reign on that day.

Also, keep in mind that caffeine is often hiding in many of the foods and drinks you might consume for the rest of the day too. All of this caffeine adds up and you shouldn’t exceed 400mg in single day from all sources.

Coffee, tea, sodas and even chocolate contain varying amounts of caffeine.

Does Reign Energy Drink Have Sugar?

The words sugar free spelled with cookies.
Free from sugar, a plus for your health.

Reign is entirely sugar-free, meaning it’s definitely a lot healthier than many other sugary energy drinks.

If you’re a health enthusiast, a can of Reign is definitely a lot better for you in terms of health, as you won’t be adding any extra sugars into your diet in exchange for an energy boost.

You’ll also get to avoid the dreaded sugar crash you often get from sugary energy drinks, which is a definite plus if you plan on getting things done even after the effects of the energy drink wear off.

As always, you shouldn’t ever have too much sugar in your diet. As a guide, the AHA recommends a daily sugar limit of no more than 25g for women and 36g for men.

So even if Reign has a pretty small impact on your diet, it’s best to keep your overall sugar consumption low, especially if you live a rather sedentary lifestyle.

Does Reign Energy Drink Have Artificial Sweeteners?

While free of regular sugar, Reign Energy does contain artificial sweeteners, namely sucralose, and acesulfame potassium.

As zero-calorie sweeteners, sucralose and acesulfame potassium don’t actually affect the nutritional value of Reign, which is definitely a plus, especially if you’re more health-conscious.

While you’ll definitely be getting the sweetness without all the guilt that comes with it, there are definitely some safety concerns regarding the long-term use of artificial sweeteners.

In any case, the FDA has approved artificial sweeteners for general use. Therefore, as long as you’re not constantly consuming products with artificial sweeteners in them, you should be perfectly fine.

That said, if you’re not too keen on artificial sweeteners and would prefer some old-fashioned sugar, have a look at the article I’ve written on the best energy drinks with less sugar for some great alternatives.

Other Ingredients

BCAAs

Reign have 1000mg of BCAAs (Branch-Chained Amino Acids) in the ingredients mix, namely L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, and L-Valine.

The BCAAs in Reign is beneficial in maintaining a healthy diet, as BCAAs are a substance that can’t be produced naturally by the body.

BCAAs provide a whole host of benefits, namely:

  • Increased muscle growth
  • Decreased muscle soreness
  • Reduced exercise fatigue
  • Prevent muscle deterioration
  • Improved liver health

While this may sound great for an energy drink, you may already get enough BCAAs through a healthy and varied diet.

So, while the BCAAs in Reign may be beneficial, they only play a very small part, especially if you already have enough intake of BCAAs from your usual diet.

Electrolytes

Electrolytes, such as the sodium and potassium present in Reign, are essential in maintaining the pH and water balance in your body, especially if you’re doing strenuous exercise.

While electrolytes are definitely a nice addition to Reign, it’s hard to determine how much it really helps in hydrating you, considering all the other ingredients present.

If you really need some hydrating action, consider opting for a sugar-free sports drink instead, or perhaps even stick with classic water, which is definitely the healthiest choice.

Coenzyme Q1O

CoQ10 is a naturally produced antioxidant that your cells use for growth and maintenance.

However, we don’t exactly know how much CoQ10 is present in Reign, so we can’t say if the ingredient has any substantial benefits or not.

For what it’s worth, I sent a sample of a competing brand to the lab to have it tested. Among many shocking results, the level of CoQ10 was shown to be below the minimum dose required to derive any benefits from it.

I’m not saying that’s also the case with Reign. We just don’t know, so it’s worth keeping these sorts of things in mind.

B-Vitamins

B-Vitamins are a great addition to any energy drink, and fortunately, they are present in Reign as well.

For your reference, I’ve listed in the table below the B-Vitamins present in Reign, but if you need more information on B-Vitamins, you can check out this resource.

Does Reign Energy Have Side Effects?

While a can of Reign shouldn’t really cause any side effects, its high caffeine content does mean that it’s not an energy drink for everyone, especially if you’re sensitive to caffeine.

Caffeine is probably the number one cause of any side effects you may get from Reign, especially since it’s only 100mg shy of the daily recommended max caffeine limit.

Apart from headaches and possible nausea, consistently consuming too much caffeine might also lead to caffeine addiction, which is pretty hard to shake off.

With a caffeine addiction, you’ll need more caffeine in order to achieve the same effects, which will definitely be a problem if your daily caffeine fix already includes a can of Reign.

As with all energy drinks, the best way to avoid any potential side effects is to limit how many of them you have in a day.

Moderation is key for any caffeinated beverage, and the same can be applied to Reign. So as long as you’re not drinking 2 to 3 cans a day, you should be able to avoid the more notable potential side effects.

If you’re still concerned, it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor before adding Reign to your daily diet.

Is Reign or Bang Better?

Based on their ingredients, it’s hard to say whether Reign or Bang objectively comes out on top, and it’s ultimately up to personal preference as to which energy drink you might prefer.

Both Reign and Bang are sugar-free energy drinks with 300mg of caffeine and both are advertised as pre-workout drinks, with their major differences being listed in the table below:

Is Reign Energy Drink Good For You?

With 300mg of caffeine, Reign definitely works well as an energy drink, helping to keep you focused and awake for the duration of its effects.

As for its claims of being a good workout drink, there is some truth to that as well. The caffeine will definitely help with exercise performance, even if you have built up a bit of caffeine tolerance.

Reign also contains electrolytes, which can help replenish the salts in your body that you’ve lost through exercise, though unless you’re doing some really intense workout, this probably won’t be a major factor.

In any case, Reign does what it advertises on the can, although you might want to take note of your caffeine sensitivity before having Reign, as not everyone can handle the high amount of caffeine that it has.
