Are you looking for great online deals for energy drinks in Australia?
Today’s your lucky day.
In this article, I’ll be covering some of Australia’s own local brands and extending your choices to international brands if you’re keen to try something different.
You’ll get to know each of these brands in detail, from how they work to where you can get amazing deals for them online.
Let’s get started…
What’s The Best Energy Drink To Buy?
The best energy drink to buy will differ based on your preference and what you’re looking for out of an energy drink. The two main ingredients that determine if a particular energy drink is suitable for you are caffeine and sugar.
Caffeine
Similar to coffee, energy drinks range from having as low as 50mg to a whopping 300mg of caffeine or more per can. Ideally, you should choose an energy drink that suits your caffeine preference.
When it comes to the right amount of caffeine, everyone has a different tolerance. Your caffeine metabolism and how frequently you consume caffeinated beverages are the deciding factors in properly understanding your caffeine limits.
That said, even if you regularly consume caffeinated beverages, that doesn’t mean you should head straight for a crazy-strong energy drink with 300mg of caffeine per can. Energy drinks with more caffeine don’t necessarily mean more benefits.
Additionally, according to the Food Standards Code for Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ), healthy adults can only have a maximum of 400mg of caffeine per day, with 200mg per serving. The amount stated includes all caffeine sources such as coffee, tea, chocolate, and cola drinks.
That’s a position that’s echoed by the US FDA.
If you consume more than 400mg of caffeine in a day, you may end up with unpleasant side effects such as:
- Insomnia
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Restlessness and shakiness
- Dehydration
- Anxiety
When consumed in moderation, caffeine has plenty of benefits ranging from improving your exercise performance to enhancing cognitive functions. So keep your caffeine intake moderate and you’ll be sure to reap the benefits of drinking energy drinks.
Sugar
Sugar is the ingredient that makes energy drinks taste sweet and appealing. However, high sugar content is the main cause of high calories in energy drinks.
When you have too much sugar from energy drinks in a short time, you could end up with a sugar crash, which may leave you feeling sleepy and unable to perform at your peak.
Plus, excessive consumption of sugar over time can lead to health problems such as:
- Weight gain
- Diabetes
- Heart disease
- Cavities
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that healthy adults consume no more than 50g of free sugars daily to avoid the risks of health problems in the future.
Of course, this amount depends on your age, body weight, and overall health. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, your daily sugar intake should be adjusted to less than 50g to protect your health.
Nonetheless, it’s always healthier to consume less sugar and have a balanced diet instead.
You can always go for sugar-free energy drinks if you want to reduce your sugar intake.
Other Ingredients
Besides caffeine and sugar, there are various other ingredients in energy drinks. Some of the ones you need to watch out for include:
Guarana
Guarana is a Brazilian plant that naturally contains caffeine in its seeds. It’s abundant in antioxidants and can decrease fatigue. Guarana also helps enhance exercise and mental performance.
Usually, guarana is included in energy drinks to increase the amount of caffeine in the beverage. However, the caffeine from guarana isn’t typically added to the total caffeine content, so energy drinks with guarana might actually contain more caffeine than the amount stated on the label of the can.
Taurine
Taurine is an amino acid that can be found in your body, mainly in your brain, heart, eyes, and muscles. It also comes available in supplement form.
Some of the benefits of taurine are:
- Improving blood sugar control
- Boost heart health
- Improves exercise performance
B Vitamins
B vitamins are also often found in energy drinks. B vitamins are very important for your overall health and help maintain many functions in your body.
If you want to learn more about B-group vitamins, Harvard has an interesting article that goes deeper into the importance of each of the B vitamins.
How Bad Is It To Drink Energy Drinks Every Day?
Though energy drinks can make you more awake and alert, having too many cans regularly can be detrimental to your health.
Some of the dangers of consuming too many energy drinks include:
- Weight gain
- Insomnia
- Caffeine addiction
- Poor dental health
- Respiratory problems
- High blood pressure
- Caffeine overdose
- Risk-seeking behaviors
- Diabetes

What’s the strongest drink in Australia?
The strongest energy drinks you can find in Australia are Bang and Raze, both of which have 300mg of caffeine.
With 300mg of caffeine, Bang and Raze are some of the most powerful energy drinks in the world. Though the boost promised might sound appealing, it’s not wise to drink energy drinks with this much caffeine amount daily.
It’s easy to go overboard with caffeine if you’re not careful. Make sure to be mindful of your total intake and always stay within the recommended guidelines of no more than 400mg of caffeine per day.
Are energy drinks illegal in Australia?
Technically, energy drinks in Australia are not illegal or banned, however, they are heavily regulated. All energy drinks in the country must follow the Food Standards Code 2.6.4 o caffeinated beverage
This standard requires that there must have a limit of 80mg of caffeine per 250ml. In addition to this, ingredients in energy drinks are also highly regulated.
Energy drinks must also be properly labelled with the recommended daily consumption. Other caffeinated beverages however are not regulated by this standard such as coffee.

Mother
Caffeine: 160mg
Sugar: 51g
One of the more popular energy drink brands in Australia and New Zealand, Mother is a tasty energy drink with an interesting selection of flavours. Mother Energy also comes in sugar-free versions if the high sugar content isn’t appealing to you.
I think that the caffeine content in Mother is pretty moderate for an energy drink of its size. But since my caffeine preference is around 50mg to 100mg of caffeine per drink, Mother isn’t an energy drink I’ll be having daily.
Depending on your caffeine metabolism, Mother’s caffeine content might be perfect for you.
In terms of availability, Mother can be found in your local supermarkets and convenience stores. You also have the option of purchasing them online from their official website and retailers like Amazon.
Red Bull
Caffeine: 80mg
Sugar: 27g
Famous for the slogan ‘Gives You Wings’, Red Bull is the most recognizable energy drink in the world.
Apart from its refreshing taste, Red Bull has a moderate caffeine content and a considerable amount of sugar that delivers a powerful energy boost for all-nighters, workouts, and even gaming sessions.
Red Bull can be found just about anywhere that sells cold drinks. On their official website, you can find other flavours of Red Bull, including its sugar-free variation. Amazon and eBay are also great places to scout for good deals.
Rockstar
Caffeine: 160mg
Sugar: 24g
Rockstar is one of the most well-known energy drink brands in the world and also in Australia.
With 160mg of caffeine, Rockstar will surely provide you with the energy boost you need and will make a great complement to your active lifestyle.
In terms of taste, I find that it’s pretty similar to Red Bull with a slightly different texture.
Rockstar gave me a smooth energy boost but I’m not a big fan of its sugary sensation. If you don’t like sugary drinks, Rockstar probably isn’t for you.
I explore things deeper in my Rockstar review, which you might find informative.
Aside from online retailers like Amazon and eBay, you can also find Rockstar on their official website.
Monster
Caffeine: 160mg
Sugar: 54g
Monster has about the same caffeine content as Rockstar but the sugar content is more than double the sugar that Rockstar has.
Monster certainly isn’t an energy drink you’ll want to pick if you have a lower caffeine tolerance or are looking to cut down on your sugar intake.
As for how Monster tastes, I can only say that it has a very sweet taste with citrus undertones thanks to the massive amount of sugar that it has. You should also expect a possible sugar crash after the effects start to wear off.
Ultimately, Monster gives you a great energy boost that lasts for a few hours, which might be worth it, even with a sugar crash after that.
Aside from your local supermarket and convenience store, you can find Monster energy drinks on their official website. If you want some good deals for Monster, try looking on websites like Amazon and eBay.
V Energy
Caffeine: 85mg
Sugar: 29.2g
A New Zealand brand that’s owned by a Japanese company, V Energy is another big energy drink brand in Australia.
V Energy is so famous that it can be recognized simply by its iconic green can. V Energy is the biggest rival to Red Bull in Australia, which speaks volumes about just how popular V really is.
With regard to caffeine content, V Energy has a moderate amount of caffeine that’s suitable for you even if you have a lower caffeine tolerance.
V’s sugar content is a tad on the high side. Though still within the limit of the recommended daily sugar intake, you may experience a sugar crash later. As long as you consume V Energy in moderation, you should be able to avoid any unwanted side effects.
Aside from the original flavour, V Energy also has a few other flavours, including some sugar-free options.
You may want to check out the article I wrote comparing Blue V to Green V here.
You can find V Energy in all your local shops like Woolies and Coles. Besides that, you can also choose from a selection of flavours online from V Energy’s official site and retailers like Amazon.
But first, read my V Energy Drink review for the inside scoop.
Bang
Caffeine: 300mg
Sugar: 0g
From the United States, with its tagline ‘Fuel Your Destiny’, Bang promises to provide a great amount of fuel through its massive caffeine content.
Bang Energy also contains a number of other ingredients that can supposedly improve your performance significantly like Coenzyme Q10, amino acids, and Bang’s very own Super Creatine.
I requested a lab test to verify some of Bang’s ingredients and let me tell you, the results were indeed very SHOCKING. If you want to see all of the results, you can see them all here.
Bang has a wide selection of flavours, including a different list of caffeine-free variations. One of the perks of Bang is that it’s sugar-free, so you can look forward to no sugar crashes.
However, watch out for that high caffeine content, or you might end up with a caffeine headache instead.
Interestingly, Bang now produces the original formulation and also an export-friendly formulation that (I assume) was invented to comply with different rules and regulations around the world in various export markets, including Australia. Technically, the US formulation does not comply with Australia’s tough energy drink rules, but you can still find it for sale in some places.
You can get Bang on their official website, or from other sites like Amazon and eBay. But if you want the best deals, I wrote an article with everything you need to know before buying Bang Energy online.
Raze
Caffeine: 300mg
Sugar: 0g
A product of REPP Sports in the USA, Raze Energy boasts a massive amount of caffeine and the company’s own reFRESH Performance Complex that they claim improves your overall well-being and also increases your physical performance.
If you’re a fitness enthusiast, bodybuilder, or sportsperson looking for a good pre-workout energy drink, Raze might be suitable. It’s packed with BCAAs and electrolytes and promises to deliver a solid energy boost to improve your endurance.
However, you need to be wary of how many cans of Raze Energy you have in a day as the caffeine content is quite high and it may cause some unpleasant side effects.
You might be able to find Raze at certain niche fitness shops if you have any near you but to make your life easier, you can simply purchase Raze Energy from their official website or look for great deals on Amazon.
Celsius Energy
Caffeine: 200mg
Sugar: 0g
Celsius Energy is another energy drink from the US that features a proprietary “Metaplus Blend”, which consists of a mixture of natural ingredients including green tea extract.
There are four different product lines under Celsius and these product lines have varying doses of caffeine. So, you won’t get bored anytime soon with the wide variety of Celsius.
Aside from its varied product line, Celsius contains zero sugar, fat, and preservatives.
As Celsius has a high caffeine content and zero sugar, Celsius would make a good pre-workout energy drink if you find 200mg of caffeine suitable.
You may be able to find Celsius energy drinks in some special fitness stores in Australia.
C4 Energy
Caffeine: 200mg
Sugar: 0g
C4 Energy is an American energy drink that also functions as a pre-workout beverage. It’s made by Cellucor, a leading company in sports nutrition.
C4 Energy has various collections for you to pick from, each with unique ingredients and benefits.
Though C4 Energy is sugar-free, you need to be mindful of the amount of caffeine that it contains, because it packs a punch. Make sure you avoid having other caffeinated sources alongside C4 Energy.
C4 Energy is available in certain fitness shops in Australia. But if you want to save yourself the trouble of hunting around, there’s always the option of purchasing C4 Energy from their official website or Amazon.
