The Coca-Cola Energy drink (Coke Energy) is a fairly new beverage that’s produced by the Coca-Cola Company. It’s available in many countries, including the United States.
Although the original Coke already contains caffeine, this energy drink version has even more of it.
This may leave you wondering if Coke Energy is safe for everyday consumption.
Well, keep reading if you’re keen to know the answer as I’ll be addressing it in this article.
Let’s begin by looking at what makes Coke Energy different from regular Coke, and the effects that its ingredients will have on your health.

What is the difference between Coca-Cola Energy and regular Coca-Cola?
The main difference here is that Coca-Cola Energy (Coke Energy) was designed to offer you a stronger boost than your ordinary can of Coke.
Coke Energy has more than three times the amount of caffeine than regular Coke. It contains 114mg of caffeine per 12 fl.oz can as compared to only 34mg of caffeine in can of regular Coke.
You might find this cola-flavored energy drink appealing if you’re already a Coke fan. This is probably what led the Coca-Cola Company to create Coke Energy in the first place, especially since there has been a boom in demand for energy drinks in recent times.
What’s in a Coca-Cola Energy drink?
In order to decide whether you can drink Coca-Cola Energy (Coke Energy) every day, you will need to examine its ingredients list.
A 8.4 fl.oz can of Coke Energy contains:
- 105 calories
- 80mg of caffeine
- 0g Fat
- 0g saturated fatty acids
- 26g carbohydrates
- 26g sugar
- 0g protein
- 10mg salt
- 4mg niacin
- 0.38mg vitamin B6
It also contains (in small amounts):
- Guarana extract
- Citric acid
- Phosphoric acid
- Natural aroma
- Sodium benzoate
- Potassium sorbate
- Carbonated water
Now, let’s break it down and take a closer look at some of those ingredients.
An 8.4 fl.oz can of Coke Energy has 80mg of caffeine, which is actually a reasonable amount of caffeine for daily consumption.
In my opinion, anywhere between 50mg to 100mg of caffeine per serve is perfect. More than 100mg tends to be a bit much and often leaves me feeling a little nauseous or unable to concentrate.
The FDA suggests that you keep to a maximum of 400mg of caffeine each day.
That works out to about 5 cans of Coke Energy daily. However, I certainly don’t recommend that you drink that many in a single day because you’ll be getting too much of the other ingredients.
For comparison, a regular coffee contains around 95mg of caffeine and a regular Red Bull has 80mg of caffeine in it.
As long as you’re drinking anything less than that, it shouldn’t be a problem.
The good thing about caffeine is that it causes you to be really alert and increases your ability to concentrate. But if you take too much of it and reach the point of becoming overstimulated, then it becomes a problem.
For example, if you drink too much caffeine at night, you might suffer from insomnia and find yourself unable to sleep.
Just keep in mind that the more caffeine you drink, the higher your chances of facing health issues as a consequence.
Here are some other problems related to drinking too much caffeine:

- Increased heart rate
As you can see, it’s really important to be aware of how much caffeine you are consuming each day. Make sure that you’re not taking in more than you should when you’re deciding whether to add Coke Energy into your daily diet.
Coke Energy has 26g of sugar, which is quite a lot and may have an impact on your health, especially if you’re a woman.
Take a look at the American Heart Association (AHA)‘s recommended daily sugar intake shown below and you’ll see what I mean.

For women, the 26g of sugar that you’ll get from a can of Coke Energy is actually more than what you should be taking in daily. Although I’ll admit, you wouldn’t be exceeding the limit by very much.
But even for men, I’d say it’s still a pretty high amount to consume. However, you’ll at least have some room to include other sugary items in your diet if you wish to do so.
What’s really important for you to remember here is that energy drinks won’t usually be your only source of sugar, so you’ve got to balance it out with what you’re getting from other foods that you eat regularly.
You’ll need to keep track of this because once you have too much sugar in your diet, you’ll risk suffering from a sugar crash later on. When this happens, you’ll feel a sudden drop in your energy level, which will negatively impact your productivity and overall physical wellbeing. This would then cause you to be worse off after drinking Coke Energy than you were before.
So, remember to keep tabs of your overall daily sugar consumption as you consider whether to drink Coke Energy every day.

Amongst other things, Coke Energy contains vitamin B6 and niacin, which is also known as vitamin B3.

Meanwhile, guarana is helpful in several of ways:

- Promotes weight loss
- Boosts heart health

So these are great ingredients to have in an energy drink like Coke Energy.
However, you ought to bear in mind that consuming excessive amounts of vitamins can cause problems too. For example, you might experience things like nausea, diarrhea and hair loss. So remember to strike a balance here.

Conclusion: Ingredients and Nutrition
On the whole, the ingredients found in Coke Energy don’t seem to be bad for you, assuming you’re consuming it in controlled amounts.
Taking too much of Coke Energy will certainly have negative implications for your health, but this would be the case no matter which energy drink you choose to consume.
Actually, this would happen with anything you eat or drink excessively.
Because, as they say, too much of a good thing can actually be bad for you. So remember to take this into consideration when deciding whether to consume Coke Energy daily or otherwise.

From my personal experience, yes, it does work. But there are energy drinks out there with higher caffeine content, so it might not give you the kick you are hoping for if you are used to regularly consuming a lot of caffeine.
On the bright side, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing because, with Coca-Cola Energy (Coke Energy), you can get a boost whenever you need it without too much of a risk of caffeine addiction.
However, if your lifestyle involves a demanding physical routine, whether for work or leisure (a high impact workout, for instance), then you might want to reach for something a little stronger than Coke Energy.
In conclusion, Coke Energy will have you well covered if you’re an average office goer. But it might not make the cut if you’re, say, a construction worker. For such cases, I think you’d be better off choosing something stronger as your go-to energy drink.
Is it safe for me to drink Coca-Cola Energy?
Yes, it’s safe to drink Coca-Cola Energy Drink in moderation if you don’t have any pre-existing health condition.
Limit yourself to no more than 2 cans per day and be aware of what else you’re eating and drinking throughout the day and how much sugar and caffeine you’re getting in total.
However, if you’re a child, pregnant, breastfeeding or have underlying health issues it may not be safe to drink Coke Energy. Check with your health professional for the final word.
Can you drink Coca-Cola Energy drink every day?
Yes, you can drink Coca-Cola Energy every day, though I’d advise against drinking more than one can per day.
If you really must drink more than one can, go for the sugar-free options.
That way, you can still get your caffeine fix without exceeding your daily sugar limit.
If you do drink more than a can a day, I would suggest paying close attention to your body’s signals.
And if you find that you are suffering from some side effects after consuming Coke Energy, stop drinking it immediately and seek your doctor’s advice.
