The terms “overweight” or “obesity” are not an unfamiliar phenomenon in the United States anymore. In fact, it’s become so normal, that sometimes it’s those who’re not overweight that are considered the sick ones.
This is no joking matter, however. A BRFSS study on the obesity rate in the USA has made a shocking discovery.
In 2019, every single U.S. state had an obesity rate higher than 35% except two states which are Colorado and Hawaii (and the District of Columbia).
That’s a wake-up call to all citizens of the country to change to a healthier lifestyle. And, the best way to start is by looking at your energy drink.

Things to look for when buying energy drinks
When shopping for an energy drink, here are some criteria to help you find the right one.
- Sugar content
- Caffeine content
Many energy drinks are loaded with sugar. While this may make them taste good, you need to ask yourself – are you serious about losing weight?
Honestly, if you really want to lose weight, you need to ditch the sugar as often as possible. It’s one of the main contributors to gaining weight in the first place.
The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends less than 100 calories or 6 teaspoons or 25g of sugar per day for women.
As for men, the AHA suggests less than 150 calories or 9 teaspoons or 37.5 grams per day.
And, while doctors say sugar intake may not be the main factor for obesity, they believe it still may cause weight gain.
I’d suggest you skim through the ingredients list to see if there’s any added sugar. You may want to avoid those.
But, it’s best if choose the sugar-free energy drinks instead. They’re equally refreshing, and come without the guilt.
In case you’re looking to watch your weight, the first thing to know is how much your daily calorie requirement is.
Once you know that number, eat that number of calories or slightly less to run an overall caloric deficit. Even better, combine a caloric deficit with some physical exercise if you really want to see good results.
Always stay within your set limit based on your sex, age, the amount you want to lose, and how quickly you want to see those results.
I always go for energy drinks that are low in calories, or if not, ones that don’t contribute too many empty calories to my overall daily calorie intake.
Further, you don’t feel like eating for some time if you have caffeine in your system. Plus, it produces heat and energy from your body fat.
Any energy drink that contains caffeine is good enough to start these fat-burning effects.
It’s worth mentioning at this point that drinking caffeine alone won’t cause you to lose weight. Don’t believe this, despite some energy drink brands pushing this narrative.
The evidence shows that caffeine in combination with exercise helps you to burn more fat than exercise without caffeine. That’s what you should do – have a sensible amount of caffeine and then get your sweat on with some good exercise.
I recommend you follow the FDA guidelines for your maximum daily caffeine intake.
Up to 400mg is the safe number for a healthy adult.
So, don’t exceed that limit to avoid complications such as a potential caffeine overdose, heart diseases, or even, death.
Everyone loves a bargain. Some energy drinks are surprisingly affordable, while others charge extortionate prices for much the same thing.
A low price is great, but don’t compromise on the ingredients or quality of the drink. Make sure to get a good one for the price that you pay.

Can energy drinks help me lose weight?
Yes, energy drinks may help you lose weight, but only if combined with exercise.
Again, drinking energy drinks won’t magically cause you to lose weight by itself.
Energy drinks contain caffeine. Caffeine is an ingredient that burns fat by increasing your resting energy expenditure, among other good effects.
Throw some cardio in and you’ll soon be shedding those pounds.
I always try to go for the low-calorie, sugar-free energy drink options when I hit the gym.
Can energy drinks alone help with weight loss?
No, energy drinks alone won’t help with weight loss.
Sadly, there’s the truth. Caffeine without exercise and a balanced diet are of no use.
Energy drinks supply energy to your body via caffeine and other ingredients. The caffeine causes your resting heart rate to increase, meaning any additional exertion you put yourself under in the form of exercise will be more effective because of the caffeine.
Watching what you eat is just as important. While caffeine increases metabolism, it only works if your diet is within the recommended calorie intake per day.
Check your estimated calorie intake by age and gender from the Institute of Medicine to better understand how many calories you should be consuming.
What other healthy drinks are good for overweight people?
Other healthy drinks that are good for overweight people include water, green tea, herbal tea, flavored seltzer, and soda water as well as homemade lemonade.
Research confirms that water is key for weight-watchers. Your total energy intake is reduced and your metabolism increases.
If you’re just not a fan of water, try adding slices of lemon, orange, or lime for flavor. That might help.
Here are a few alternatives to energy drinks that you might want to explore.

- Homemade lemonade
I usually go for a few drops of honey, if I want to sweeten my drink.
Is it advisable to mix multivitamins with energy drinks?
No, it’s not advisable to mix multivitamins with energy drinks.
It’s not particularly dangerous, but, it’s discouraged to mix them together.
Energy drinks are already loaded with B group vitamins and other ingredients. When you mix them with other vitamin supplements you may be doubling up on things that you’re already getting, which would be a waste.
So, when you take both vitamin supplements and energy drinks, you may not be enjoying all of the benefits of your supplement.
All you’re doing is exposing yourself to possibly exceeding the recommended daily intake for some of these vitamins… and probably also wasting money.
Can energy drinks reduce my appetite?
Yes, energy drinks can slightly reduce your appetite.
The caffeine in energy drinks can reduce hunger and desire to eat for a short period.
However, keep an eye on the number of calories in your energy drink to make sure you’re not unwittingly consuming a large number of calories in an effort to not eat food – which kind of defeats the purpose!
Caffeine isn’t a silver bullet for losing weight, but it can help you on your weight loss journey.

The caffeine content is a shocking 300mg per 16 fl.oz can. Personally, I think this is way too much caffeine to have at one time, and it gets you pretty close to the FDA recommendation of no more than 400mg of caffeine in a single day.
The drink has zero carbs, sugars, and calories. That’s ideal if you’re watching your calorie count.
The drink is a favorite among gym-goers, with some slick marketing making the drink a popular choice.
However, Bang is not without its share of controversy.

The company commissioned and paid for 6 university studies that they lean heavily on in the marketing messages.
I’m probably one of the only people who actually bothered to read all of the reports that came out of each of those studies.

The bottom line is that caffeine is great when combined with exercise, but drinking caffeine without exercise is not going to help you to lose weight, despite the clever marketing from some brands.
Having said that, Celsius tastes good and is actually a good choice for calorie-conscious individuals if you’re going to be able to combine these energy drinks with some physical exercise.
