Things to look out for when buying energy drinks

As an aspiring tennis player, it’s smart to choose the best energy drink that matches your needs.

To do so, here are some criteria to consider.

Caffeine content

This study confirms that caffeinated energy drinks help the physical and match performance of athletes.

Tennis requires good stamina and hopping around on a wide court. Plus, you’ll need a steady grip and powerful swing to get the ball over the net.

Caffeine increases intensity and endurance performance, so you can power through sets.

The FDA recommends a maximum of 400 mg of caffeine per day for a healthy adult. That’s caffeine from all sources – energy drinks, coffee, tea, sodas and elsewhere in your diet.

In light of this, it makes sense to choose an energy drink that contains a sensible amount of caffeine. Some energy drinks contain a huge amount of caffeine, but they probably aren’t the best option for serious tennis players or other athletes.

In my opinion, between 50mg and 100mg of caffeine per drink is ideal.

I find anything more than 100mg of per drink to be a bit overpowering and it often leaves me unable to focus or think straight. Not great when you’re facing breakpoint and the match is in the balance.

Sugar content

The American Heart Association’s (AHA) recommends no more than 25g of sugar per day for healthy women and no more than 37.5g per day for healthy men.

It’s important that the sugar content in your energy drink is within the health limit, even if you are running all over the court and burning a lot of energy.

This study published in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine on nutrition for tennis found that glycogen depletion during a long tennis match can cause fatigue, but recommends carbs instead of reaching for the nearest chocolate bar – or sugary energy drink.

Perhaps it’s a good idea to speak to your doctor or health professional to see what they recommend with regard to how much sugar you should have in your diet based on how much tennis you’re playing.

No, energy drinks and sports drinks are not the same. Energy drinks and sports drinks contain different ingredients and are for a different purpose.

Energy drinks are formulated to increase energy and boost concentration. These drinks usually include caffeine as one of their main ingredients.

Other common ingredients in many energy drinks include guarana, taurine, sugar (although there are plenty of sugar-free options), and B group vitamins.

Red Bull, Monster and Bang are popular brands of energy drinks, but my favorite is REIZE.

Sports drinks are designed to rehydrate and replace lost electrolytes after physical activity, like tennis. They also restore the carbs that your body uses during the activity.

Sports drinks may contain sugar, electrolytes, minerals, protein, vitamins, or caffeine – but this isn’t so common.

Some famous brands are Gatorade and Powerade.

What does Rafael Nadal drink every day?

Rafa usually drinks water and sports drinks during match play.

If you’re a fan, you may have noticed Nadal lugging two bottles in every match. One bottle is his sports drink and the other is for his water.

These two are important for him to replace the lost water and electrolytes from his body throughout a grueling match.

After a match, he loves a protein shake to help with muscle recovery. And, interestingly, he drinks filtered seawater. This helps his body to recover essential nutrients, especially potassium.

What does Roger Federer eat and drink between matches?

Roger Federer eats snack bars as well as bananas and drinks energy drinks between matches.

If you’ve watched his games, you would have seen him munching on his favorite snack bars on the bench during breaks.

A banana is a must-have. It supplies good carbs and potassium, necessary for the game. That’s how he refuels and prevents cramps.

He once tweeted that he was drinking Irn-Bru and eating some biscuits made by Andy Murray’s grandmother.

What types of energy food do tennis players eat?

Tennis players eat a variety of high-energy foods like high-carbs and high-protein energy bars as well as energy gels, energy drinks and chews.

Energy bars are often two-thirds carbs, and average between 200 and 300 calories per serving. It’s smart to have a high-carbs bar one or two hours before you play.

The high-protein bars work best for after games to help muscles recover. The ideal time for one is within two hours of play.

Energy gels and chews are popular choices on the tennis court these days. They’re usually high in sugar though, so read the label and talk to your health professional.

Energy drinks are growing in popularity, but they have their place and also their limitations.

For example, no energy drink will be enough to make up for not getting enough sleep. Also, you should consider how much caffeine you want to consume before or during a match because it will likely be different for different players.

The amount of caffeine in Guru is optimal in my opinino, at 100 mg.

It s a little high on calories at 80. Yet, 21g of sugar is ideal for keeping energy levels high and also staying under those AHA recommendations on maximum sugar intake levels.
