My personal caffeine intake per day is 50 to 100 mg. Any more than that gives me killer headaches and even made me sick for a few hours.

Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) passed a special food standard for formulated caffeinated beverages that such beverages should contain less than 32 mg of caffeine per 100 ml and be labeled clearly with advisory statements.

You may ask that why you should obey these regulations and advisories when your caffeine intake in a day is your own business.

Well, let me tell you about caffeine overdose and what it’s like.

These are the common symptoms of a caffeine OD:

  • Shakiness
  • Vomiting
  • Feeling unwell
  • Confusion
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Panic attack

For sure this isn’t the situation you’d want to be in while you’re doing any manual labour.

So, I’d recommend sticking to the recommended caffeine limit. And most of all, only consume energy drinks if you really need them!

Sugar

Let’s face it, sugar makes us feel good. Wanna know why?

When you consume any sugary food or drink, your body goes through a sugar rush, and your brain starts to release two hormones- serotonin and dopamine.

Serotonin is a brain chemical that triggers happiness and wellbeing. Dopamine is also a brain chemical that releases the feeling of pleasure within your body.

Energy drinks (except for the sugar-free ones) usually contain a lot of added sugars and sweeteners that stimulate your feel-good senses.

That’s the reason you feel like you’re in a better mood and less exhausted after consuming a single can.

But that doesn’t mean you should start searching for energy drinks with the highest content of sugar.

Consuming high amounts of sugar causes a sugar rush. But what happens later is a sugar crash which will leave you feeling drained.  

On the NHS website, adults are recommended to have less than 30 g of sugar in a day (roughly the amount of 7 sugar cubes). This includes sugar that comes from other food and drinks you consume in a day.

If you continue to have a high-sugar diet, you might suffer from these health problems in the future:

  • Weight gain
  • Heart diseases
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Kidney diseases
  • Cancer
  • Cavity
  • Depression
  • Gout
  • Dementia

Would a sugar-free energy drink be a healthier option then? Of course! Especially if you plan to keep your sugar intake low.

Energy drinks usually contain taurine and B-Vitamins to give you a powerful boost of energy.

Taurine plays many important roles in your body such as, maintaining hydration and electrolytes balance and regulating your immune system and antioxidant function.

Usually taken as a supplement, some studies have suggested that taurine combined with caffeine helps to improve mental performance.

B-Vitamins are also typically present in energy drinks, especially vitamin B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6, and B12.

These vitamins are important for your health and wellbeing and play an important role in maintaining your energy levels, metabolism, and brain functions.

Riboflavin produces energy in your body, while niacin transforms that energy into carbs, fats, and proteins that the body can use.

Pantothenic acid creates new enzymes, proteins, and fats, Vitamin B6 plays a vital role in brain functioning and the body’s immune system, and Vitamin B12 maintains your metabolism.

So, check these key ingredients when choosing your energy drink.

Most of all, check the nutrition label to ensure your getting the right dose of these ingredients.

Does caffeine improve physical performance?

Yes, caffeine improves physical performance because it stimulates the nervous system delaying exhaustion which improves overall performance.

It can also strengthen endurance and it’s the main reason why athletes engaged endurance sports should have a can of energy drink or caffeine pill before starting the game.

When caffeine enters your body, it blocks the flow of adenosine receptors, a brain chemical that triggers drowsiness. Once the adenosine receptors are out of the way, the brain becomes more ‘alert’ and releases adrenaline throughout the body.

When your body is pumped with adrenaline, you won’t feel tired or sleepy anymore. Instead, you’ll feel active and ready to get on with your day.

A study has proven that caffeine enhances physical performance during prolonged activities and lengthens the period of time before exhaustion.

In addition, research conducted on 16 sleep-deprived participants showed that caffeine maintains physical performance even after losing a night of sleep.

However, I wouldn’t recommend drinking energy drinks whenever you’re sleep-deprived as it could bring more harm than good if it becomes a habit. Make sure to get enough rest the night before intense manual labour.

Do energy drinks promote better work performance?

Yes, energy drinks promote better work performance!

Energy drinks contain caffeine and other energy-boosting ingredients like taurine and various vitamins, which enhance your work performance.

These targeted ingredients contained within a can or sachet of energy drinks are proven to improve your mood, concentration, and memory.

It was discovered through an experiment conducted on 271 healthy volunteers that after consuming energy drinks, the volunteers persevered in completing cognitively demanding tasks despite being tired.

With the benefits you gain from energy drinks, you’ll feel more motivated to work even when it requires a lot of physical effort from you.

Is it safe to drink energy drinks every day?

In my opinion, it is not safe to drink energy drinks every day because of the various side effects associated with it.

Drinking large amounts of energy drinks every day can lead to various health complications such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and may also lead to poor oral health if used long-term.

Also, if you consume high caffeinated energy drinks daily, there’s a high risk of caffeine overdose, especially when your tolerance for the stimulant is low.

On the other hand, if your favourite brand of energy drinks is low in caffeine, you may consider it safe for everyday consumption.

As you can see, it may not be advisable for you to consume energy drinks daily because it can clearly jeopardise your overall health.

I strongly suggest drinking energy drinks only when you really need.

What other drinks can give me energy?

Water

It’s no surprise water is the first one on the list.

As we all know, water makes up 60% of our body. Regular bodily functions like cell activity, temperature regulations, and waste removal require an adequate amount of water to work properly.

Water provides your system with energy and ensures smooth physiological functioning. This study shows that proper hydration could even enhance physical performance.

Meanwhile, another study conducted on 430 athletes demonstrated that dehydration could significantly impair performance.

Dehydration can be dangerous to your health. So it’s important to drink plenty of water every day.

The recommended water intake per day is 1.2 litres, roughly six to eight glasses, particularly for cold climates like in the UK. You need to drink more than 1.2 litres if you live in a hotter climate.

Drinking a sufficient amount of water provides several benefits such as:

  • Improves energy levels and brain functions
  • Prevents and treats headache
  • Relieves constipation
  • Treats kidney stones
  • Prevents hangovers
  • Aids in weight loss

After a long day of sweating and hard work, water is perfect for getting your body’s fluids back into balance.

Sports drinks

Sport drinks typically contain water, carbs, and electrolytes and are usually marketed to athletes.

The main functions of sports drinks are to replenish the water and electrolytes you lose through your sweat and supply carbohydrate that your body will use as fuel.

Studies have shown that sports drinks can boost performance in endurance-based physical activities.

So, if you’re in need of an energy boost without the extra sugar and caffeine, you can totally go for sports drinks.

But I would still recommend you to drink water after a few bottles of sports drinks.

Coconut water

Like sports drinks, coconut water contains carbohydrates and electrolytes, which makes it suitable to treat dehydration.

On the plus side, it’s also tasty, invigorating, and supplies your body with loads of nutrients.

Here are the benefits of coconut water:

  • it has antioxidant properties
  • may have benefits against diabetes
  • can prevent kidney stones
  • a delicious source of hydration
  • might reduce blood pressure
