Taurine is a wonder molecule you shouldn't keep out of your diet. Do you want a longer, healthier and more active lifestyle? Then Taurine should already be on your shopping list. Taurine, or L-Taurine as it's also known, is one of those things that is so good for you but not well understood. So it is often forgotten. If you're familiar with amino acids taurine is one of those - they're what proteins are made of. So what is it? Why do scientists refer to it as the 'Wonder Molecule'? Is it really made from bull sperm or urine (no)? Will it generally benefit a healthy lifestyle (you bet!)? Here are fifteen totally titillating tidbits about taurine, its health benefits and where you can get it!

1. Taurine Amino Acid Powerhouse

Taurine is also known as 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid for all the budding or interested scientists out there. It is an amino acid - a kind of protein you can find throughout your body and in nature. Taurine concentrates in particular areas of your body like the eyes, heart, brain, and muscles. Unlike many proteins found in your body, like Keratin, for instance, Taurine is not a ‘building-block’ of the body. Taurine acts in various important functions in the body. It has been linked to treating a number of conditions. Those conditions include congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, diabetes, and retinal damage to name a few.

Taurine is classified as a “conditionally essential” amino acid rather than “an essential amino acid.” A “conditional amino acid” can be made by the body. An “essential amino acid” cannot be made by the body and must be provided by the diet. Therefore if a person cannot manufacture their own natural supply, they must take supplements or make alterations to their diets. 

Diets which include low levels of taurine, such as vegan or vegetarian diets, might require supplementation. This is due to the fact that Taurine is not as readily accessible in vegetables as it is in meat.  Additionally, aging bodies cannot produce a suitable level of Taurine, which again could lead to supplementation. 2. No, Taurine Is Not Bull Sperm

These days, it is manufactured by chemical synthesis in food ingredient processing plants. In China alone, there are 40 taurine manufacturers! So you can see, there's no shortage of synthetic taurine sources. 

Taurine was first collected in 1827 by two German scientists, Friedrich Tiedemann and Leopold Gmelin. They discovered the molecule in ox's bile - the substance made in your liver which helps you digest food. Because taurine was first discovered in an ox, Tiedemann and Gmelin decided to honor this. They named it for the Latin term for bull: Taurus. Which literally means bull or ox. 

3. Taurine Resides in Your Body and In Nature

Taurine is naturally made in your body, through a process called the cysteine sulfinic acid pathway. Don't worry there will not be a quiz and you do not have to say this out loud. This process involves the oxidation (losing of electrons) of the sulfhydryl group of the cysteine molecule. Through this process cysteine sulfinic acid is formed. This then undergoes decarboxylation to form hypotaurine and eventually Taurine. Science part nearly over.

Taurine can be found in many foods and is often added to energy drinks like REIZE, Red Bull and more. The main sources of Taurine are animal foods such as meat, fish, and dairy. Although some vegetarian foods provide it in smaller amounts, it is unlikely that these will provide sufficient quantities of taurine to optimise the body’s levels.  The daily intake of taurine varies greatly between individuals, from 10 – 400 mg per day, with an average of 58 mg. Individuals following a vegan diet tend to have the lowest intake levels, as a large number of taurine sources are animal-based.

Taurine supplements are a common way to get the recommended daily dose but it can be found in many other sources as well. The form of Taurine used in supplements and energy drinks (like Red Bull) is usually made synthetically and not derived from animals. Therefore, these types of taurine supplements are suitable for vegans.

4. Taurine Benefits: Why It's a Popular Energy Drink Ingredient

This is because of the physiological effect taurine has on us like improving muscular function and physical performance. It is often added to soda and energy drinks. Some energy drinks include up to 600-1,000 mg or more of taurine supplement in one single serving. However, doses of up to 3000 mg per day are generally considered to be safe with side effects of taurine rarely seen, although the long-term outcomes are not clear. If you're wondering, is taurine bad for you? Know that it appears that other common constituents of energy drinks, such as glucose and caffeine, are more likely to cause significant side effects in high doses than taurine.

Be smart. Using energy drinks as your primary (or only) source of Taurine is not smart. Energy drinks and soda drinks contain other substances which you should limit yourself on, like caffeine. In comparison to the average dietary intake of 58 mg per day, many energy drinks contain high doses of Taurine with 1000-2000 mg in each serving. Considering that some individuals may consume more than one serving of taurine each day, this has been a concern for some health advocates and stimulated research in the area.

According to Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D. there are studies which suggest that Taurine combined with caffeine improves mental performance. But, it must be noted for transparency's sake that there may be high amounts of other ingredients in energy drinks. Ingredients like caffeine or sugar. Too much caffeine can increase your heart rate and blood pressure, interrupt your sleep, and cause nervousness and irritability. And added sugar may provide unwanted added calories.

Side Tip: Do Your Research

We all know that completing daily tasks can feel tedious and uninspiring. Whether it’s study, writing reports at home or doing a range of tasks in an office environment, efficiency and time management are everything. However, it can be difficult to keep daydreams, distractions and worries at bay. Getting into flow and exercising deep concentration is key to working effectively, feeling energised and deeply satisfied. Focus is a muscle, and the following tips will help get you flexing and strengthening.


Your focus and attention is not a fixed characteristic, it is finite, like a muscle that tires. Simply deciding to focus when the need arises isn't going to work unless you have had the right mental focus, training and practice.

The best way to improve focus is through practicing mindfulness and meditation. Just 10-20 minutes of present meditation and focusing on the breath can form new neural pathways that aid the ability to focus on a single task. The repeated use of a circuit triggers cells called oligodendrocytes that begin to wrap layers of myelin around neurons in the circuits. Basically, it cements the new information in your brain.

However, if your brain is firing too many circuits at the same time (e.g you're studying for exams and Instagram is open in the next tab), it fails to isolate a specific circuit and your brain fails to retain any information. Imagine trying to specifically build your bicep muscles whilst doing a bench press. Your arms may be used a tiny bit in the process but lets be honest, It’s not going to happen. This should be a room, desk or corner only for work where no excuses or intrusions are allowed. This space allows you to treat each focused work session as a scheduled meeting with your own commitments. Don’t make it your bed or any other place you associate with relaxing. If you have to stay back an extra hour on Friday to avoid lugging home a mound of paperwork, push yourself to do just that! Your future self will thank you dearly and you’ll feel truly accomplished all the way home.

2. Travel local:

Perhaps you don’t have enough leave saved up for an international trip or you just came back from one and are suffering withdrawals. Either way two days really doesn’t leave much time to travel; particularly when you include flight times. An easy-fix would be to explore your surroundings. It’s incredible how many people overlook their own backyards and miss hidden gems! 1. Denial a.k.a. sidewalk furniture:

We’ve all done it, the slow crawl in the car past a bunch of sidewalk chairs and desks. And while we insist that ‘it’s practically brand new’ as justification for bringing some of it home, we know deep down it’s really not. But hey, you have your independence! So until the time comes where you can afford to splash out on stylish, new furniture, that wobbly TV unit will have to do.

Anger comes in many forms ranging from Ikea furniture flatpacks to exotic Pinterest recipes. One minute you find a lovely dish of Singapore chili prawns and the next you’ve turned the kitchen upside-down and your mouth is on fire. In the end you will realise these things take time and after weeks of experimenting and takeout, you’ll get the hang of feeding yourself 3 meals a day, 7 days a week.

3. Bargaining a.k.a. going without things:

When toilet paper and tissues virtually do the same job it seems silly to spend that extra $6 right? And who needs bug spray, that’s why we have so many shoes. Bargaining is a key part of being a homeowner, especially when the rent is high and the funds are low. As you progress into a more stable career, your trolley will overflow with luxuries but until then, bargaining will save your bank balance.

4. Depression a.k.a. MUM HELP ME!:

It may be as bad as moving back in for a few weeks or just end in you sneaking out of the old family house with leftover food after a visit. Either way going home and feeling like you made a mistake will happen eventually. However, a cup of tea and a 20-30 minute pep talk is all it will take to make you realise how much you truly want to thrive in your newly-independent lifestyle.

5. Acceptance a.k.a. home sweet home:

You’ll learn to recycle properly. You’ll pay the electricity bill on time instead of just using candles. You’ll limit your fast food intake and even cook vegetables occasionally. And while you may not get it right all the time, your home is exactly that, yours. It may not be perfect but it will be yours and by god will you be proud of it.

Maybe you’ve just started that new job or are in the process of starting a family; either way you don’t have the time to make it to the gym as much as you used to. But you’re finding yourself getting a little doughy around the edges as well as feeling a little self-conscious of how tight your clothes seem lately. Staying fit shouldn’t be a chore so here are a few simple tricks that, when combine, show great results.

1. Make time

If you catch the bus, consider getting off a few stops earlier. Or if you usually drive a couple of blocks to get basic groceries, perhaps walk the distance (and maybe even use the bags as weights).

2. Substitute

The most trivial changes make a world of difference and one of these is substituting any sugary drinks for something healthy, like water. It doesn’t have to be drinks you substitute, also try celery and carrots with dip instead of chips.

3. Take up an active hobby

Swap out choosing a new TV show on Netflix for a picturesque river run or an hour of rock climbing. There’s always ways to make time for exercise if you get rid of the things that keep you lazy.

4. Insert active movements into everyday tasks

Turn dusting the shelf into a stepper routine.

5. Make use of your surroundings

If you have a 2 storey house or a long home, put items you frequently use in random places so you have to climb the stairs or go to the spare room to fetch them. It’s all about moving. So long as you’re working it off you can eat virtually whatever you want.

6. Stay hydrated

Confessions of a serial online dater

Have you ever had that moment when you’re sipping on your umpteenth beverage after work whilst listening to your companion, and you’ve thought, ‘Gee, this person’s really lovely!’ It’s happened to plenty of us at one point or another, but sometimes we’re over-looking a few important factors. They might be a co-worker, a really good friend, or unavailable for several reasons, but you probably won’t pick up on these factors until it’s too late. It was one (or several) too many incidents such as this one that made me download almost every phone dating app imaginable. So here are a few pointers I picked up through my year of ‘swiping right’.


Advertise well

Play to your strengths. What are you reading? What’s your job title? What are you obsessed with? Tell us the awesome things about you that are going to attract the people YOU want to meet. As tempting as it is, avoid the group photos because it’s incredibly off-putting trying to work out which one you are in the photo. It’ll also save you awkward questions like – ‘Can you introduce me to your friend?’ (Yes, it happens). Each picture should say something about you and your life.

Extra tip: Selfies don’t say so much.

Be open-minded

The person’s photo isn’t great, but you’ve read their profile and now you’re curious. Give it a go! Photos aren’t always a great indicator of attraction. As you probably already know, sparks happen when you see your date laugh, or watch them light up when they’re telling you an embarrassing anecdote. Don’t restrict yourself to models and astronauts because you’re missing out on the hidden gems!

Trade honesty

Yes, it’s awkward, but ‘Hey, what are you up to?’ doesn’t tell you much about this person, and things can grind to a halt awfully quickly. Point out something in their profile that caught your interest and please make sure it’s more than ‘Wow, you’re really hot!’ Make a list of genuine questions that you want to know the answer to. The other person is compelled to answer the questions and open up about themselves if you’ve created a comfortable environment, and they’ll start to ask you for the same honesty. It’ll also help you weed out the small percentage of people who aren’t genuinely looking.

Stick to your guns

Someone that you’re really into and have been chatting to for ages suddenly messages you at 11pm on a Saturday night asking if you’re out. Remember that you are a catch and you deserve someone who respects you, and is just as nervous about spoiling things as you are. It’s time to set a meet up for drinks! Only when you really want to meet the person should you attempt this, otherwise you’ll both chicken out, OR it will be painfully awkward. If you leave it too long, the interest will fade, so it’s essential that you get in at the right moment. Even if you’re feeling really confident, avoid setting up a dinner date for the first meet up. That’s like asking to meet them on Valentine’s Day. It’s just too much pressure on both of you. Besides, it might happen organically after the first drink!

Date Night

Even though you’ve been on a first date before, it never gets any easier. Do yourself a favour and pour yourself a glass of REIZE before hand to be the best version of yourself. You’re sitting in front of a blank word document and you’re flexing your fingers, ready to smash out a master piece. It’s going to be great. It’s going to be spectacular. It’s going to change the world and you can’t wait to get it out! Just one problem. You’re not writing anything down. You minimize the document and hit play on the TV show you’ve been eating through faster than… no, you can’t even think of a clever metaphor. Game over, man, game over. Sound familiar?

As a writer you’ll be torn between relief and horror to hear that this happens to everyone, and in typical writer form, you’ll sulk over the fact that you’re just like every other writer out there. Fear not my dear comrade, your story and the way you decide to tell it are still exclusively yours, so with that in mind, here are some tips to break through that block that’s holding you back.

Watch a bad movie

Now I know you were just about to hit play on something compelling to inspire you, but give this a go. Listen to the tacky dialogue. Have a laugh at the substandard special effects. Make note of the gaping plot holes and cliché characters. Now check the production budget on IMDB and gasp. Yes, awful things get made and yes, of course, you can write better than that. Feeling better now?

Find your people

Just like you, they’re sitting on their couches watching re-runs of their favourite television shows, or have just been overcome with the desire to clean their ovens. Set up a writers group. The numbers don’t matter, as long as you have someone there. Pick a day and promise each other work. Now you have an audience and a bit of pressure there. Nothing back breaking, but just a little sting to put the fight back in you. Swap some work, read it over and discuss it. Look at you, being productive!

Go stag to an art gallery

Take yourself seriously as an artist and have a stroll though. Bring a notebook with you and jot down anything that comes to mind. Make notes of works that you like and ones you don’t and why they affect you. Write about the people you see. Scribble down things you hear them say. No Instagram, tweets or Facebook check ins! Commit to the day! Find yourself a quiet spot afterwards, skim over your notes and mull it all over before you plug back in.

Writify your environment

You’re back at exactly the same spot, fingers hovering like helicopters over the keys. Let’s give you a fighting chance this time! Set up a timed social network blocker to keep you from wandering and turn your phone on silent.
