Uptime Energy is a pretty premium energy drink, with its star ingredient, cane sugar, and the fact that it tastes quite good, albeit at a very high price.

Each 12 fl. oz can of Uptime energy drink contains 142 mg of caffeine and 150 calories, making Uptime a drink suitable for workouts and other heavy physical activities. The original version contains 37 g of cane sugar but they do have a sugar-free version.

Although it’s undeniable that it tastes great, you might be wondering, is Uptime Energy Drink actually bad for you?

As long as you have it in moderation, having a bottle of Uptime Energy should be perfectly fine, given its relatively average caffeine content compared to other energy drinks. However, you may want to take note of its sugar content, which can cause negative side effects for those who are diabetic.

Uptime Energy Drink Calories

An original 12 fl. oz version of Uptime Energy has 150 calories, while the sugar-free version only has 5 calories.

As a reminder, the recommended daily calorific limit for healthy young adults ranges from 2000 to 2400 calories for women and 2400 to 3000 calories for men.

For an energy drink, an original bottle of Uptime Energy is pretty average in terms of calories, having 150 calories, which is only 10 calories less than a 12 fl. oz can of Red Bull.

While 150 calories may seem pretty small, it does eventually add up over time if you drink multiple bottles of Uptime Energy in a day.

Too many calories in your system can lead to noticeable weight gain, which isn’t a problem if you live a fairly active lifestyle, as you’ll be able to burn off those calories easily.

However, if you live a rather sedentary lifestyle, there’s always Uptime’s Sugar-Free version, which has a far more manageable 5 calories to its name.

How Much Caffeine is in Uptime Energy?

Always remember to check the caffeine content.

Each 12 fl. oz bottle of Uptime Energy has 142 mg of natural caffeine.

142 mg of caffeine per 12 fl. oz is pretty average for an energy drink, being only just a little bit lower than either a Monster or Rockstar (160mg per 16 fl. oz)

As I personally prefer to have between about 50 to 100 mg of caffeine in my energy drinks, 142 mg of caffeine is a bit higher than I’d like, but it’ll definitely give you a boost when you need a little more caffeine.

Of course, depending on your caffeine metabolism, you might need a bit more than that to get a good boost going, especially if you’re very much used to caffeinated beverages.

But if you happen to be caffeine-sensitive, I would recommend you don’t go higher than 200 mg of caffeine per serving, especially if you’re new to the whole energy drink field.

As a reminder, the FDA approves a caffeine intake limit of no more than 400 mg per day. Any more than that might lead to side effects such as:

  • Insomnia
  • Restlessness
  • Headaches
  • Stomachaches
  • Dizziness
  • Dehydration
  • Anxiety

As long as you’re not downing 3 to 4 bottles of Uptime a day or having other caffeinated beverages along with Uptime, you should be able to avoid the side effects of too much caffeine.

How Much Sugar is in Uptime Energy?

Just because it sounds healthier, doesn’t mean that it is.

An original 12 fl. oz bottle of Uptime has 37 g of cane sugar, while the sugar-free version has, you guessed it, absolutely no sugar in it at all.

While it doesn’t sound like much, 37 g is actually quite a bit of sugar, roughly translating to about 2 and a half tablespoons of sugar, which is around the same amount as a standard 12 fl. oz bottle of Coca-Cola (39 g).

The AHA recommends a max daily sugar intake of no more than 25 g for women and 36 g for men, so a bottle of Uptime Energy is definitely a lot more than what you should be having.

Of course, having a little bit of sugar isn’t the worst thing. It’ll definitely give you a dopamine boost when you need a lift.

Even so, you’re also a lot more susceptible to sugar crashes, as all that sugar will definitely elevate your blood sugar levels to a higher point than normal.

As for Uptime having ‘healthy’ cane sugar instead of processed sugar, it should be noted that all sugar absorbed by the body is nutritionally the same, so there isn’t a health benefit with cane sugar.

Does Uptime Energy Have Artificial Sweeteners?

While Uptime Original is free of artificial sweeteners, Uptime Sugar-Free does contain sucralose, which is a zero-calorie artificial sweetener.

While Uptime Sugar-Free is the healthier version, it does contain sucralose, which doesn’t add in any extra nutrients or calories but is still a pretty unknown factor in the long run.

That said, the FDA has approved artificial sweeteners for general use, so as long as you’re not having too many food and drinks with artificial sweeteners in them, you should be fine.

And if you’re going for health above all else, energy drinks with lower sugar content or those that are naturally sweetened might be the healthiest choice you can make.

Is Uptime A Good Energy Drink?

With a refreshing taste and fruity finish, Uptime is certainly one of the tastier energy drinks available, although it isn’t exactly the cheapest option. While Uptime definitely gets the job done with a lavish flavor, it’s slightly lacking in terms of B-Vitamins, which is a staple amongst most energy drinks.

Still, you get some other ingredients that benefit you, such as Panax ginseng and angelica root extract, along with a serving of calcium and Vitamin C, which is pretty rare in energy drinks.

So, those ingredients are definitely a trade-off between Uptime and most other energy drinks, especially when you consider the fact that it costs around $2.50 a bottle, which is a lot pricier than many other energy drinks.

I would personally recommend that you only have one Uptime Original, or a maximum of 2 Uptime Sugar-Free a day.

For Uptime Original, a 12 fl. oz bottle already has more than the recommended amount of sugar you should be having a day.

While it’s perfectly okay to splurge every now and then, consistently having excessive sugar can lead to a whole host of potential health problems.

Therefore, it’s best that you stick to a maximum of 1 bottle per day, and only when necessary.

For Uptime Sugar-Free, you can get a lot more leeway with how many bottles you can drink, simply because it doesn’t have a worrying amount of sugar or calories like its original counterpart.

However, there’s still 142mg of caffeine present in Uptime Sugar-Free, so keeping track of your caffeine intake is crucial if you don’t want to end up with a headache after having an Uptime.

All in all, as long as you’re having Uptime Energy in moderation and not having other caffeinated beverages on the side, you should be perfectly safe from any side effects.

Is Uptime Energy Bad For Your Health?

As long as you have it in moderation and you’re relatively healthy, having a bottle of Uptime Energy shouldn’t bring about any negative effects on your health.

While Uptime Energy is very much a middle-of-the-pack type of energy drink, it’s still an energy drink meant to give you a quick boost of energy and focus when you need it.

So if you’re keen on avoiding any potential side effects, make sure you’re complementing your Uptime Energy consumption with a relatively healthy lifestyle and balanced diet just to be safe.

As with all caffeinated beverages, you’ll definitely have to moderate how many you have in a day; one extra bottle can make all the difference between heightened focus and a dreadful headache.
