The purpose of caffeine includes enhancing your brain and central nervous system by blocking adenosine, which are transmitters that regulate sleep. This then provides you with an adrenaline and dopamine rush.
That said, there’s no denying that they are some energy drinks out there that contain way too much caffeine, which may easily tip over the daily caffeine limit of no more than 400mg, as recommended by the FDA.
Over-consuming caffeine may lead to serious health issues, such as:
- Muscle breakdown
- Digestive issues
- High blood pressure
- Rapid heart rate
It’s also important to note that caffeine metabolism varies depending on your body size and physiological make-up. For me personally, I enjoy my drinks to have around 50 to 100mg of caffeine.

Sugar is also famously used in caffeinated beverages like energy drinks as it helps enhance the flavour, texture and preserve the drink.
Now, sugar may not be all that bad as you think as long as you don’t go over the limit of AHA‘s recommended daily sugar intake of no more than 25g for women and 36g for men per day.
Otherwise, you may be at risk of experiencing some serious health issues, such as:
- Tooth decay
- Weight gain
- High blood pressure
- Cardiovascular disease
This explains why you should only consume sugary energy drink occasionally to maintain a healthy level of sugar intake.
Of course, if you want to avoid adding unnecessary sugar to your diet plan, you can always opt for sugar-free energy drinks, which is a great alternative as you can enjoy drinks without feeling too guilty about them.

While it does a pretty good job as an energy-booster, I find that its caffeine and sugar amount to be relatively high and can easily cause a sugar crash once the effect wears off.

Next up is also a famous energy drink brand, Rockstar Energy Drink. Similar to Monster, it has rather high caffeine content, but I must admit it tastes good.
Although it has generous variations of flavors to choose from, the biggest downside of Rockstar Energy is it contains way too much sugar and caffeine than I personally prefer.
It definitely leans more on the unhealthy side of energy drinks with that combo of sugar and caffeine together.
All in all, it’s a great energy drink and definitely something I’d recommend having once in a while if you’re healthy and don’t have any health issues, of course.
