Some ‘healthy’ energy drinks contain sweeteners like artificial sweeteners, stevia, and sugar alcohols, which may be healthy to some but can cause negative effects for others. The long-term effects of artificial sweeteners still remain unknown, though there are some studies that have suggested that sweeteners are connected to a few potential health risks.

So while there are no ‘safe’ energy drinks, you can do your part by only consuming energy drinks in moderation and be mindful of your diet.

Can you drink energy drinks every day?

In my opinion, it’s okay to drink energy drinks every day provided you drink them in moderation.

If you really need the extra energy boost, it’s fine to have an energy drink to increase your mental focus or exercise performance.

However, I recommend that you take a look at the ingredients and nutrition facts listed on every can of energy drinks before purchasing.

This is to make sure you don’t go over the daily caffeine and sugar limit to avoid any future health issues. I’ll cover more about caffeine and sugar in the coming sections below.

Is one energy drink a day bad?

Consuming one energy drink a day is not bad but it also depends on how often you drink them and the brand of the energy drinks you pick.

Energy drinks with large amounts of caffeine and sugar are definitely not something I’d encourage you to drink on a daily basis. It’s best to consume energy drinks as an occasional drink to avoid any adverse effects.

What are the disadvantages of energy drinks?

Energy drinks can lead to several adverse effects and health problems if you don’t drink them in moderation.

One of the most concerning issues with energy drinks is their growing popularity among adolescents, which exposes them to large quantities of caffeine, sugar, and other stimulants from a young age. The side effects of these energy drinks tend to manifest in greater intensity in adolescents and it isn’t beneficial to their development.

Here are several possible short-term and long-term adverse effects of energy drinks:

I don’t think it’s any surprise that sugar has earned a bad reputation for being the main source of a lot of health problems over the years. However, we often forget the catch, it only becomes bad when consumed in excess.

A 2013 study discovered that sugar has some benefits for us in the form of glucose, which becomes fuel for our brains. This was proven in a 2011 study where it was found that consuming glucose would be advantageous in increasing memory and executive functioning.

But, you must know that glucose usually comes from carb-rich foods like bread, rice, and fruit. Energy drinks contain added sugar, which is unhealthy for our bodies in the long run.

According to the AHA, the maximum recommended daily sugar intake is:

Stick to these guidelines for optimum health.

An excessive intake of sugar may lead to health-related problems like:

So while it’s okay to indulge in sugar once in a while, it’s best to consume sugar in moderation or you can opt for sugar-free energy drinks that are just as tasty and sweet as regular energy drinks.

What are the Effects of Caffeine on the body?

Caffeine acts as a stimulant, which means that after consuming caffeine you’ll notice; that your fatigue will decrease and your alertness increase.

This is because caffeine blocks adenosine, brain transmitters that regulate sleep and causes the brain to release dopamine and adrenaline.

Additionally, caffeine also has been widely used to improve physical and mental performance. A 2016 study reported that moderate doses of caffeine enhanced cognitive functions like vigilance, attention, and reaction time.

Any more than that, and you might experience negative effects like:
