Volleyball is a competitive sport that’s played by hitting a ball using the hand over a net.
It’s then hit back and forth until someone misses the ball and the ball falls to the ground. Volleyball can be played almost anywhere, though I suggest somewhere with a padded floor like grass or sand.
Volleyball is a physically demanding sport that requires a lot of energy and alertness to succeed. As such, it might help to consume energy drinks to keep up your energy up during a game.

Do professional athletes drink energy drinks?
In my opinion, I’ve met many people who do professional sports including some volleyball players.
A lot of them do drink energy drinks during practices and their games and quite a number of them swear by the energy drinks that they do drink.
However, there are also a lot of them who absolutely refuse to drink energy drinks due to what caffeine does to them.
And that’s ok as well since it’s up to the individual.
Personally, I think it really depends on you, how caffeine affects you and what you prefer. Just because an athlete drinks an energy drink or doesn’t drink one doesn’t mean you should follow suit.
I would say it’s up to you and if energy drinks work for you then you should go for it.
And if they don’t then it’s alright as well. Though I would say that maybe you just haven’t found the energy drink that suits your taste and needs yet.
Does Caffeine affect the efficiency of Volleyball Players?
In this study, they investigated the effect of caffeine-containing energy drinks to enhance physical performance in male volleyball players.
In the experiment, they tested 15 college-level volleyball players to see if those who have consumed energy drinks had better efficiency in play.
They then put the players through an agility test and recorded their times to determine whether the hypothesis that energy drinks help volleyball players was true or not.
To their surprise, the players who had drunk the caffeinated energy drink had shorter times compared to the players who did not drink the caffeinated energy drink.
As such, it can be concluded that caffeine does positively impact the efficiency of volleyball players.

Furthermore, the caffeinated energy drink increased the proportion of game actions that finished in scoring while it did not increase the rate of mistakes.”Del Coso et al, International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance.
And not to mention, the excess boost of energy that an energy drink provides is great for any volleyball player.
What should I drink before a volleyball game?
It’s important to make sure that you are well hydrated with water before a volleyball game.
In addition to water, before a game you may also want to consider having a small to moderate amount of caffeine to keep your senses sharp and to boost your physical performance.
If you do decide to mix some energy drinks into your pre-game warmup, I suggest them about 30-45 minutes before the game starts.
The reason for that is that’s about how long it takes for the caffeine in energy drinks to become fully diluted in your bloodstream.
To put it another way, you’ll feel the maximum effect from the energy drink about 45 minutes after you drink it.
Can NCAA athletes drink energy drinks?
The short answer is yes, the National Collegiate Athletic Association does not allow guarana, which is an ingredient found in some energy drinks, but the other common ingredients are not prohibited according to the NCAA list of banned substances.
Caffeine is considered a restricted substance, not a banned substance.
To consume enough caffeine to cause yourself a problem with NCAA testing officials, you would need to drink around the entire FDA recommended maximum caffeine intake of 400mg shortly before testing.
The NCAA does test it’s players for caffeine content before they participate in games.
So if you are playing college volleyball and are looking to see if you can drink an energy drink before your game, I would say a little is fine, but don’t overdo it – and make sure you’re not drinking an energy drink that contains guarana because that’s a banned substance.
Maybe it’s alright during practice, but definitely not during the tournaments as you might get in trouble.
However, I would still say that an energy drink is a good pick me up if you are not under the NCAA or if you are playing volleyball for fun or general fitness.
What to look for when picking energy drinks?
There are three important things to look for when picking energy drinks. These include:
- Caffeine Content
- Sugar Content
Caffeine is the main thing in energy drinks that helps you to keep an alert mind when playing.
It keeps your mind and body ready for when the next ball might come your way so you can react properly.
However, too much caffeine can cause a multitude of problems such as insomnia and anxiety.
In my opinion, between 50mg and 100mg of caffeine per serve is the perfect amount.
I find any more than about 100mg per serve to be a bit overpowering and sometimes leaves me feeling nauseous and unable to think straight.
As mentioned above, the maximum daily recommended caffeine content is 400mg for healthy adults, according to the FDA.
Sugar is another common ingredient in many energy drinks that gives you a quick energy boost.
However, I would watch how much sugar you consume as too much sugar is bad for you. Especially when playing volleyball, you need stamina and as much energy as you can get.
And you don’t want to suffer from a sugar crash midway playing volleyball. Now that would be horrific!
And that’s literally what’s going to happen if you consume too much sugar and overdo it. Worst of all, you’ll just end up feeling more tired after.
I feel like that’s not worth consuming the sugar, despite the sweet taste. If you want to know how much is too much, the AHA has these maximum recommended daily sugar intake for adults:

I think both you and I agree that the best things in life are free.
The next best thing is getting a good deal and not paying any more than you need to. Some energy drink brands charge $3, $4, $5 or even more for a single can.
Fortunately, there are still good deals to be had if you know where to look to find them. Also, getting a good deal doesn’t mean that you need to sacrifice on quality if you choose wisely.

Best Energy Drinks for Volleyball Players
In no particular order, here are a few brands of energy drink that I think are decent choices for volleyball players. Check them out and see which one works best for you.
Monster Khaos is a cocktail juice mixed with the original Monster energy drink base and is great if you like a fruit-flavored energy drink.
It has 154mg of caffeine and 37g of sugar which is a bit much of both ingredients, but great for a strong pick me up if you’re going to be burning all of that sugar off.
It’s also good if you want something stronger than the average energy drink and can handle the higher than normal caffeine content.
Containing 27g of sugar, 80mg of caffeine and that familiar taste, Red Bull is a great all-around energy drink.
I recommend Red Bull for most athletes because it gives you a decent amount of caffeine, but not too much that you might suffer from it.
Overall, the ingredients list is quite sensible, although I’m not a fan of the 27g of sugar.

Bang Energy Drink
With a hefty 300mg of caffeine and no sugar, I’d say Bang Energy Drink is great if you’re looking for a HUGE amount of caffeine in a short period of time.
NCAA athletes might want to be careful with this one though.
It supposedly contains a bunch of amino acids and CoQ10 and is the go-to energy drink for many people who do more high-intensity workouts.
However, I should point out that when I paid to check the ingredients of Bang at an independent laboratory some of the amino acids that Bang says are included weren’t detected at all.
There were significant other questions raised by the lab testing too, so definitely check out the full report before buying Bang.
Personally, I think it tastes great, but I’m not a fan of the really high caffeine content. I’m also not thrilled with some of the claims the company makes. Still, it might be the drink for you.
3D Energy Drink
3-D Energy Drinks are completely sugar-free with 200mg of caffeine per serving.
Now that’s great for anyone who likes a little more caffeine in their diet, but not so great if you want something with less caffeine.
However, the fact that it’s sugar-free is definitely an added bonus and it works well if you’re trying to cut down on your sugar intake.
Best of all it comes in these cute cans which I think look great.
REIZE Energy Drink (highly recommended)
