Best energy drink after no sleep (to stay awake)

There are days that we just can’t get a good night’s sleep. This could be because we’re up studying for an exam, or preparing for a presentation with the higher ups.

Maybe you have a newborn that wakes up every 2 hours.

Or maybe too, there’s just so much going through our minds that we can’t get a shut eye. 

And worst of it all, we still have to wake up and get out of bed to attend school or work or rather just go through life after no sleep.

I don’t know about you but I’ll immediately want a can of energy drink to get me through my day. 

However, is it safe to be fuelled by caffeine and sugar after no sleep? Are there gonna be side effects?

Maybe read through this post first before deciding on which energy drink to help you get by after no sleep, and pray you don’t doze off in between.

What to look out for in energy drinks

Caffeine

As the main ingredient in energy drinks, caffeine provides you the energy you get after drinking it and keeps you awake too.

This is because caffeine is a psychoactive stimulant that works by mimicking adenosine, which are “sleep cells”. Caffeine therefore prevents us from feeling sleepy, keeping us awake. 

Which is why, a caffeinated-beverage is ideal when you need to pull an all-nighter or to keep awake afterwards.

If you’re looking for an energy drink to keep you up, you might think to reach for one with the highest caffeine content. You should actually not do that.

Everyone has different caffeine tolerance. If you’re on the lower end, too much caffeine intake can cause some side effects like jitters, palpitations and stomach upset. That’s the last thing you want when fighting through a sleepy day.

My suggestion is to consume energy drinks with less than 100mg first, to gauge your tolerance. If you feel you can handle it and need more caffeine then maybe you can increase your caffeine dosage.

Do keep in mind too that the recommended daily caffeine intake is 400mg. If possible steer clear of overdosing on caffeine, if won’t be good for your body especially while you’re running on low sleep.

Sugar

Sugar too provides energy that comes with an energy drink. That energy boost can keep you awake for a short amount of time and once the sugar wears off, that’s when you’ll be experiencing a “sugar-crash”. 

A sugar-crash would leave you feeling lethargic, definitely not going to help you keep awake after no sleep.

So, if preferable to choose an energy drink with zero sugar. It’s also a healthier option.

Guarana

Guarana is a fruit that naturally produces caffeine. In fact, 1g of guarana equals to 40mg of caffeine. That’s a lot!

Usually guarana’s caffeine content is not included in the total caffeine amount. So when choosing an energy drink, look out if guarana is part of the ingredients and maybe you’ll be consuming more caffeine that the said amount.

Price

Yup, fighting off sleepiness can result in cloudy judgement. But that doesn’t mean you should spend more on energy drinks.

Most energy drinks have the same content – caffeine and sugar. Which is why I always go for the best deal in town. Why pay more for basically the same contents?

How can I get energy after no sleep?

• Take a nap.

Even if it’s just for 10 minutes it could help you feel sharper afterwards. Think of it like a quick reset for your body. Of course you’ll need to fully recharge by getting a good night’s sleep afterwards.

• Grab a caffeinated beverage.

100mg of caffeine, either from coffee or energy drinks can give you an energy boost for about 3 to 4 hours. However be reminded that “caffeine-crash” exists, so once the caffeine wears off, you’ll be back to feeling sleepy.

Exercise.

Move about and get your blood circulating. Maybe walk to school or work that morning or go for a jog. Exercise can help boost your brain power to give you the energy to power through after no sleep. 

Would I be able to sleep after drinking an energy drink?

It’s less likely to be able to sleep after drinking an energy drink. 

Caffeine has the properties to keep you awake, which is why you’ll grab a can of it when you feel like you can no longer keep your eyes open.

If you wish to have a good night’s sleep afterwards, my advice is to cut off energy drinks around 4pm.

Personally for me, 4pm is already too late and I’ll have slight trouble sleeping at night. Also, sometimes if your body is really tired, you’ll just knock out even if you just had caffeine.

How to survive work with no sleep?

First and foremost, you’ll need to stay alive to get through the day so if you drive to work, maybe don’t drive on that day. It’s dangerous for you and other road users if you get behind the wheel with no sleep. You’re likely to doze off.

Secondly, you’ll need to eat. Not getting food in your system would cause your glucose levels to drop and would cause moodiness and you’ll be feeling cranky.

I don’t think any work can be done cause you’re running on no sleep and no food. Completely fuel-less. A car can’t run without fuel, and so is with a human body.

Is 4 hours of sleep enough?

According to a polyphasic sleep routine, 4 hours of sleep is just what you need. 

This sleep routine can be practiced in order to generate more productive hours by being awake.

But with that said, there are some cons to this sleep routine. Of course, if you can’t fit in well with this pattern, you might be pushing yourself too hard, depending too much on supplements to keep you awake and then not getting a good rest.

What happens after 24 hours of no sleep?

When you’ve not slept for 24 hours, your mental state is primarily affected. You won’t be able to work efficiently as you’ll be losing focus and concentration.

You might be functioning like someone who’s drunk, which means that your hand-eye coordination and decision-making process is tainted, thus why you should keep away from driving, doing hard labor and making important decisions. 

Is not sleeping bad for my health?

Yes, not sleeping can badly affect your health. 

For adults, it’s recommended to get around 7-9 hours of sleep.

Not getting enough sleep can actually result in health issues like diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure among others. 

When you’re not getting enough sleep, you’re likely to be dependent on coffee or energy drinks to get you through the day, which in turn isn’t a healthy practice and could lead to caffeine overdose.

That’s why getting enough sleep on a daily basis is important and key to overall good health.

Red Bull is easily a go-to energy drink after no sleep. 

Can Red Bull Energy Drink keep me awake after no sleep?

Yes, Red Bull energy drink can keep you awake after no sleep. 

Energy drinks are designed to boost your energy levels, allowing you to mental alertness and increase your physical performance.

Red Bull contains 80mg of caffeine, 27g of sugar and 110 calories. 

Based on the caffeine content, I personally like it as I find it’s a moderate amount to keep you up without an impending crash.

However, the sugar and calories present is something I don’t fancy. I find the amount unhealthy and you shouldn’t be taking it regularly.

But fret not, there’s the Red Bull Total Zero option, with the same amount of caffeine but zero sugar and calories. So yes, I’ll take one of that please.

Best energy drinks after no sleep

Xyience Energy Drink

Sugar: 0g

Caffeine: 176mg

Calories: 0

Xyience Energy Drink has a high caffeine content, almost hitting the half mark of our daily caffeine intake.

This particular brand too carries guarana seed extract in it, which means that the total caffeine amount might be more than just 176mg.

I’m not sure about your caffeine tolerance, but for me, this high amount after no sleep is going to hit me pretty hard. I think it might be more of a hindrance than help to me. 

But with that said, the zero sugar and calories does entice me as it’s a healthier option as compared to other energy drinks loaded with sugar and calories.

Advocare Spark Energy Drink

Sugar: 0g

Caffeine: 120mg

Calories: 15

Advocare Spark Energy Drink caffeine content is still over 100mg, but might not be that potent as compared to Xyience.

Advocare too isn’t your typical can of energy drink, it comes in powder form and you just need to mix it with water.

Advocare Spark is available in 10 different flavors. If you’re a fan of fruit-flavored beverages, this might be something you fancy. However, despite it being sugar free, it does contain 15 calories.

XS Energy Drink

Sugar: 0g

Caffeine: 80mg

Calories: 10

XS Energy Drink seems like a pretty decent choice here with 80mg of caffeine. That’s roughly around the same caffeine content in a cup of coffee.

It’s however packaged in a smaller can, 8 fl. oz which is half the size of Xyience, therefore this means that its caffeine content is quite powerful. 

But there’s no harm in trying this out, it also comes in 18 different flavors, which are also fruit based.
