Best Energy Drink for Golfers (energy for 18 holes)

Golf requires a lot of energy.

Being exposed to the elements, walking for miles and all the while trying to focus and concentrate on the strategic aspects of the game can be demanding.

As such, it might be worth considering whether or not you can use energy drinks to your advantage to gain the edge on the golf course.

What does Tiger Drink while playing Golf?

Tiger Woods is known for his consumption of energy drinks.

He seems to really like consuming Monster Energy Drinks and can often be seen on the course with an energy drink in his hand.

In fact, he was in talks to partner with Monster Energy Drinks to produce his own energy drink to suit his personal flavor and preference.

He’s so famous around Augusta that there are 2-D cardboard cut-outs of him around town endorsing Monster Energy Drink. There are about 40-50 of them in total.

Is Red Bull good for golf?

Red Bull can be helpful for golfers, depending on what you want to use it for.

Red Bull contains 80mg of caffeine, which has a range of positive physical and mental effects that can help you play at your best.

This study found that consuming caffeine improved golf performance and also reduced that rate at which people felt fatigued, compared to a placebo.

However, keep in mind that Red Bull isn’t the only energy drink to contain caffeine. Quite the opposite actually, basically every energy drink contains caffeine and therefore they could all offer you the same performance improvements.

A few things to consider regarding Red Bull and your golf game, which are also true for any other brand of energy drinks too:

  • Keep in mind that a regular 8.4 fl.oz can of Red Bull contains 27g of sugar. Other energy drinks have varying amounts of sugar. Always read the label to understand what you’re drinking.
  • Keep in mind that energy drinks are not designed to help you rehydrate or replenish electrolytes

Red Bull can certainly be helpful for golf, but it’s important to understand when to use it and what its limitations are.

The same is true for other energy drinks too.

What do energy drinks do to your body?

Energy drinks give you a boost that typically last for 2-3 hours, with some less-noticeable effects lasting several hours more.

Medical News Today published this infographic that shows what you might expect to happen in your body at certain time periods after consuming an energy drink.

Within 10 minutes of consuming an energy drink, you’ll experience a rise in your heart rate and blood pressure.

During the next 15 to 45 minutes is when the energy drink is working at its best, you can become more alert, concentrate and focus more effectively and are able to perform tasks with the utmost of precision and ability.

That’s if you get the dose right of course, if you have too much caffeine you may not experience such positive effects.

At around 45 minutes after consumption, the energy drink becomes fully absorbed into your bloodstream and this is when you will probably feel the maximum effects.

Within an hour after that, you may begin to have a sugar crash as the effects subside. However, if you choose an energy drink that doesn’t contain any sugar, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Usually, that’s the end. However, if you’re a regular drinker of energy drinks, after another 12 to 24 hours, you may begin to suffer from caffeine withdrawals.

Withdrawal symptoms include headaches, irritability and constipation.

During this time you might crave caffeine, but it’s important to be aware of how it’s affecting you and also make sure that you’re in control of your habit.

Overall, energy drinks can be very effective and useful if used the right way and not consumed in excess.

Golf Nutrition

When playing golf it’s important to have good nutrition to play at your best.

Like any serious athlete, golfers need to watch what they eat and try to eat healthy to really excel on the course.

Junk food, processed food, and foods that are high in sugar might be easy options, but they aren’t going to be the best choices to fuel your golf game or achieve your best.

So what are the best options for golf nutrition?

There’s plenty of info about this available on the internet already, so to summarize things you should be trying to to:

  • Choose snacks that are as food-like as possible and avoid the junk
  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Stay hydrated

Sounds simple enough, but if you follow these basic guidelines you’ll already have an edge on the golf course compared to your junk-food eating competitors.

What to look for in an energy drink?

When looking for an energy drink to help your golf game, it’s important to look at 3 key things:

  • Caffeine
  • Sugar
  • Price

Caffeine

Caffeine is the most important energy-boosting ingredient in energy drinks and it’s important to get the level right for optimum results.

In my opinion, between 50mg to 100mg of caffeine is the perfect amount per drink. Any more than that and I find it to be a bit overpowering and it sometimes leaves me feeling nauseous and unable to concentrate.

The FDA recommends a maximum of 400mg of caffeine per day for a healthy adult.

Different people have different tolerances to caffeine, so it’s important to understand what works best for you.

Sugar

Sugar can provide quick energy, but it’s bad for your health.

You know by now – sugar is bad for you. If only it didn’t taste so good though, right?

While sugar can provide energy, it’s probably not the best option and may lead to a sugar crash.

The AHA recommends a maximum amount of sugar intake each day:

Women100kcal / 25g / 6 tsp

The above recommendations are totals for your entire day from all food and drink sources.

Some energy drinks contain more than these daily limits in a single can. So, you can see the problem…

I suggest choosing a sugar-free energy drink to avoid sugar crashes and to stay well under the AHA recommendations.

Price

Pricing can be a bit of a pain and choosing the right energy drink feels like you need to put a hole in your wallet.

However, if you know where to look there are lots of good deals to be found. Also, saving some money doesn’t mean that you need to sacrifice quality.

Similarly, paying more for your energy drinks doesn’t mean that you’re getting a superior product.

Best energy drink for Golfers

In no particular order, here are some energy drink brands that I suggest you check out to help your golfing performance reach its full potential.

Monster

A can of monster energy drink.
Monster energy drink has a higher caffeine and sugar content than I typically recommend.

Monster energy drink, as recommended by Tiger Woods, is a great energy drink for golf.

It contains:

  • 170mg of Caffeine
  • 54g Carbohydrates
  • 54g Sugar
  • 370mg of Sodium
  • Vitamin B2
  • B3 Vitamins
  • Vitamin B6 
  • B12 vitamins

With 170mg of caffeine, it’s certainly more than I typically like in my caffeinated drinks, but it might work for you if you have a high tolerance.

Monster isn’t my top choice, but it might work well for you.

Celsius Energy Drink

Celsius Energy Drink has a fruity flavor and contains:

  • 10 calories per can
  • 60mg of Vitamin C
  • 1.7mg of Riboflavin
  • 20mg of Niacinamide
  • 2mg of Pyridoxine hydrochloride
  • 6mcg of Cyanocobalamin
  • 300mcg of Biotin
  • 10mg of D-pantothenate
  • 50mcg of Chromium
  • 1.81g of “Metaplus Proprietary Blend” (including 200mg of caffeine)

Celsius is completely sugar-free but has a lot of caffeine, even more than Monster in fact.

I would say that it’s great if you are trying to go the sugar-free route, but extra caffeine.

Red Bull

Red Bull is a good choice for golfers, but contains a bit too much sugar and for my liking.

I really like the caffeine content though, I think 80mg is just about right.

The ingredients in Red Bull are:

  • 10 calories
  • 28g carbohydrates / 8.4 fl.oz
  • 27g sugar
  • 80mg of caffeine / 8.4 fl.oz 
  • Niacin
  • Vitamin B6
  • Vitamin B12
  • Pantothenic Acid

Red Bull is the most famous energy drink in the world for a region – it’s a good choice and has inspired just about every other brand of energy drink that has come since.
