When it comes to energy drinks, most people have the assumption that energy drinks are not all that healthy for your body. It’s also not a surprise that energy drinks have a reputation of being harmful to your health.
However, this is not always the case. To say that all energy drinks are unhealthy is an overstatement. There are lots of different brands and types of energy drinks, each with a different combination of ingredients.
But are energy drinks actually good for your body?
There are some ingredients in energy drinks that are great, and other ingredients that aren’t so good, but far from being really bad for you. If drank in moderation I don’t see how these energy drinks are actually that bad for your body.
Sure, some energy drinks contain too much sugar or caffeine, far more than what’s actually good for you. However, there are also energy drinks that contain a sensible amount of caffeine and little or no sugar.
With all the confusion and misinformation around energy drinks, how do you actually know which energy drink is best for your body?
What’s the best energy drink for your body?
If you look at the back of the can of any energy drink, you’ll find that it contains caffeine. Caffeine is the key ingredient in an energy drink that carries out its function by keeping you awake and energized.
When it comes to choosing an energy drink that’s best for your body, those that contain a sensible amount of caffeine are the best. Personally, I find energy drinks that contain caffeine levels between 50mg to 100mg are the best for your body, as they don’t cause any negative side effects that are associated with excessive caffeine.
In fact, it’s recommended that you limit your caffeine consumption to no more than 400mg per day. That’s from the FDA themselves.
Caffeine in excess can cause some severe negative side-effects such as:
The second most important criteria in choosing an energy drink that’s best for your body is the sugar content. Many energy drinks contain tons of sugar in each serving, which is very bad for you.
When consumed in excess, sugar can cause some severe side-effects to your body such as:
- Premature aging
- Increased risk of type 2 diabetes
- Weakened immune system
- Tooth decay
In fact, it’s recommended that you limit your sugar consumption to no more than 37.5g for men and 25g for women daily– that’s what’s recommended by the American Heart Association.
Sure, sugar might be great at giving you a quick energy boost, however those effects are usually short-lived. In fact, after a couple of hours, you’ll be left having to deal with a dreadful sugar crash, which is definitely not why you decided to drink an energy drink in the first place.
When it comes to choosing what’s best for your body, it’s always better to go for an energy drink that has little to no sugar. In fact, nowadays there are lots of sugar-free versions of energy drink that you can choose instead of having to drink those that are sugar-ladened.
Taurine is a type of amino acid that can be naturally produced by our body and found in healthy foods such as meat, dairy, and fish. It’s also one of the most common ingredients found in energy drinks and works great together with caffeine to improve mental performance.
Taurine helps your body:
- Maintain hydration and electrolyte balance in cells
- Create bile salts
- Regulate the minerals within your body
- Regulate the antioxidant function and your body’s immune system
- Support the overall function of your central nervous system
When it comes to choosing an energy drink that’s best for your body, those that contain taurine are better than those that rely solely on caffeine and sugar in my opinion.
Last but not least, you should also keep an eye on the levels of B vitamins that are in an energy drink. B vitamins are important nutrients that your body needs and are responsible for many vital roles in your body.
When you’re out looking for an energy drink that’s more beneficial to your body, get the ones that contain B-vitamins such as Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (Niacin) and Vitamin B12.
These B-vitamins are crucial and help with the energy production process within your body.
You might be wondering how would price affect my body?
As weird as it may seem, price doesn’t have a direct effect on your body but it does have an indirect effect. Imagine trying to go for an energy drink that’s good for your body only to find out that it cost a fortune. Well, I’m sure that’s going to give you psychological shock-jokes aside.
When comes to choosing an energy drink that’s good for your body, you wouldn’t want it to be so expensive that it becomes impractical to buy on a regular basis. Most of us have a limited budget each week and know money doesn’t grow on trees.
When it comes to price, lower is obviously better than higher.
So with that all out the way, let me introduce…
The best energy drinks for your body:
Caffeine content: 80mg
Sugar content: 27g
Price: $2 per 8.4 fl.oz can
Red Bull is the most popular energy drink in the world.
With just 80mg of caffeine in a can, Red Bull energy drink is good at giving you a boost in your energy levels without the negative effects of too much caffeine.
The only downside to Red Bull is that it contains too much sugar in my opinion. However, you can easily switch to the sugar-free version of Red Bull which has the same caffeine content, but no sugar, which is much healthier for your body.
It doesn’t matter if you’re getting the regular or sugar-free version of Red Bull, both contain taurine and B-vitamins which are great for your body.
If you think about it, for only $2 per drink Red Bull isn’t all that expensive. However, it’s far from the being the most affordable option – there are many energy drinks that are far more affordable than Red Bull.
There are sometimes some good Red Bull deals on Amazon, so it’s worth checking the listings from time to time.
If you’re considering making Red Bull part of your daily routine, I strongly recommend reading my other article where I talk all about exactly what to expect when you start drinking Red Bull every day.
Caffeine content: 160mg
Sugar content: 54g
Price: $3.20 per 16 fl.oz can
Monster energy is well known for its claw mark logo that depicts the letter M.
This green mean beast contains 160mg of caffeine per can. Although it’s well above what I usually prefer, after trying Monster myself it doesn’t seem to cause any negative side effects. However, this is highly dependant on your tolerance to caffeine. Different people will have a different reaction to this dosage.
In any case, 160mg of caffeine doesn’t compare to some of the strongest energy drinks in the world.
Just like Red Bull, the downside of Monster Energy is that it contains too much sugar, which is bad for you.
However, you can always just go for the sugar-free versions of Monster such as Absolute Zero and Zero Ultra which are much healthier alternatives. They both contain the same amount of caffeine and other ingredients, but no sugar.
If you look at the price, Monster energy is somewhat expensive. Paying $3.20 for an energy drink every day is going to cost you a fortune. However, look at the bright side, Monster energy comes in a variety of flavors. This is great as you’re bound to find something that suits your taste. Considering that, $3.20 seems to be a reasonable price to pay to get an energy drink that you’ll enjoy drinking.
Check the current price on Amazon here.
If you’re curious to know exactly how Monster and Red Bull are different, you should check out my other article where I break down all of the differences between the two brands.

Celsius “fitness drinks” contain lots of great healthy ingredients such as green tea, calcium, and vitamin C, all which is good for your body.
Not to mention that Celsius also doesn’t contain all the bad stuff like sugar and artificial colorings. A single can of Celsius energy contains 200mg of caffeine which is half of the recommended daily dosage. Therefore drinking more than 2 cans of Celsius in a day is not recommended. Celsius energy also contains other healthy ingredients such as B vitamins which helps to give your body more energy.
The best part of Celsius is that it’s sugar-free.
So you won’t have to worry about facing the negative side-effects of too much sugar more or experience a dreaded sugar crash.
At around $2.25 per 12 fl.oz can, Celsius is indeed an affordable option for your energy needs and not bad for your body either.
