Coding is a long and often tough task that requires lots of energy, focus and concentration.

Coding is an important job that allows computer programs, websites, and phone apps to run smoothly. Programmers can take hours or even months for the coding of a certain program or app to be completed. 

What’s the best way to get an energy boost to help you through this demanding activity?

The answer may be energy drinks!

Energy drinks are packed with caffeine and other ingredients that don’t just energize you, but also improve your mental performance.

In this article, I’ll be detailing how caffeine helps your cognitive performance and the best energy drinks you should have when you’re coding.

Caffeinated beverages are often associated with staying up late and spending hours on mentally-demanding tasks. Caffeine can indeed help you with those, but it also depends on how much caffeine you consume.

Some people have a higher tolerance to caffeine – either naturally present in their genetics or they’ve been consuming caffeine regularly – and thus, can consume more.

On the other hand, others might have a lower tolerance for caffeine or are even sensitive to it, and can’t have a lot of caffeine before the side effects kick in.

If you’re not used to drinking lots of caffeine in one serving, you should control your caffeine intake by consuming it in hourly intervals. Make sure not to overload your body with too much caffeine at one time.

For me, 50mg – 100mg of caffeine per drink supplies me with enough energy for several hours without overloading my system with any adverse effects.

The FDA recommends that healthy adults consume less than 400mg of caffeine each day, with no more than 200mg in one serving.

Although a caffeine overdose is pretty rare, it can happen especially if you don’t watch how many cans of energy drinks you have in a day.

After ingesting caffeine, some possible common side effects that may occur are (depending on how well your body tolerates caffeine):

  • Feeling more awake and alert
  • Increased body temperature
  • Feeling restless, irritable or anxious
  • Headache
  • Dehydration
  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased breathing rate

A caffeine overdose would lead to serious symptoms like:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Vomiting
  • Chest pain
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Convulsions

Therefore, even if you’re a regular consumer of caffeine, it is best not to consume it all the time.

Sugar

Sugar tastes good and seems to give you more motivation and energy, but in truth, it’ll quickly turn into a sugar crash once the rush is over.

When a sugar crash sets in, your energy levels will drop and you’ll start to feel sluggish, something you don’t want happening in the middle of coding.

Many energy drinks contain an excessive amount of sugar that isn’t healthy for you. Fortunately, there’s plenty of sugar-free energy drinks to choose from nowadays.

Furthermore, consuming too much sugar can lead to many health problems like weight gain, heart disease, and diabetes over the long term.

The AHA has a few guidelines about sugar consumption you can refer to:

Men should consume less than 36g of sugar or 150 calories per day, while women can have up to 25g of sugar or 100 calories per day.

If you’re getting a sugar-free energy drink, remember to get one that comes with a moderate caffeine content too, or you might become too restless to even focus on the task at hand.

The side effects of caffeine and sugar crashes can be easily avoided by checking the label on the back of the can to properly understand the ingredients and the respective amounts present in energy drinks.

The price of energy drinks can range from roughly $1 – $5, depending on the brand.

Naturally, there’s a perception that the more expensive an energy drink is, the more ingredients and benefits it has.

This isn’t always true. In my experience, there are many affordable energy drinks that also contain plenty of nutritious ingredients and provide great benefits.

Can Energy Drinks Give You Energy When Coding?

We could all use a quick jolt of energy at times.

Energy drinks can give you energy when coding as they contain caffeine, an ingredient that stimulates you to a state of wakefulness and makes you feel more energized.

The truth is that caffeine prevents sleep-regulating molecules called adenosine receptors from doing their work.

When you’re in a state of tiredness, your brain sends out adenosine receptors that make your muscles relax and your body prepare for sleep. Once you ingest caffeine, the caffeine pushes these receptors aside and changes the signals to your brain.

As the caffeine starts to take effect, your blood pressure and heart rate rises, causing you to feel more awake and alert.

15 minutes to 2 hours in, caffeine will reach peak blood concentration levels and this is the time when the stronger effects of caffeine will set in.

However, this depends on the brand of energy drink. Some energy drinks can provide a caffeine boost that goes into effect quickly while others have a delayed energy boost that only takes place after 30 minutes to 1 hour.

And that’s the magic of energy drinks and how they can help supply energy to you.

A study performed on a group of young men discovered that caffeine increased alertness and vigilance compared to a placebo.

Energy drinks can also improve your performance when you’re sleep-deprived. A 2005 study reported that caffeine improved vigilance and psychomotor performance even in a state of sleep deprivation.

Of course, after a certain period of time, the effects of caffeine will wear off, and the sleepiness will return. If your energy drink contains sugar, you’ll probably experience a sugar crash too.

It’s best to reserve your energy drinks for when you need the boost of energy to avoid energy drink overconsumption.

Although energy drinks can give you an energy boost that’ll last for a few good hours, you must be mindful of how much caffeine and sugar you’re consuming from energy drinks.

Too much of a good thing can be bad.

Hence, make sure to consume energy drinks in moderation.

Does Caffeine Improve My Cognitive Performance When I’m Coding?

Caffeine can improve cognitive performance in terms of concentration, focus, attention and mood. Improvements in those aspects of mental abilities would be useful and beneficial when you’re coding.

According to a 2001 study, it was found that drinking Red Bull could increase reaction time, concentration, and memory.

Another study proved that caffeine could enhance physical performance and complex mental abilities during and after exhaustive exercise.

Thus, if you need something to keep you up and boost your brain functions at the same time, energy drinks can provide you with both. Crunching those numbers won’t as be difficult anymore.

Just make sure not to go overboard on the caffeine, as this could impair your cognitive performance instead. There’s evidence that moderate doses of caffeine do a much better job in increasing mental cognition compared to high doses.

Can Energy Drinks Help Me Stay Up All Night When I’m Coding?

Energy drinks contain caffeine that can help you stay up all night. If you’re planning to code overnight, energy drinks can provide you with alertness and focus that could last you for several hours.

The most important ingredient in energy drinks that’ll supply you with energy to pull an all-nighter is caffeine.

Sugar can give you some energy as well, but the rush won’t last long and will often result in a sugar crash once the initial energy wears off.

Some energy drinks advertise their special blends that claim to have more energy-boosting properties. They may help to a certain extent, but in the end, if you remove caffeine from the energy drink equation, it wouldn’t be effective regardless of what else is inside.

Other Ways to Keep Yourself Awake When You’re Coding?

Some of the ways you can keep yourself awake when you’re coding are:

  • Take activity breaks

Take some time out to do some light stretches to prevent fatigue and de-stress. Even a 5-10 minutes break has been suggested to be helpful in increasing productivity.

  • Drink water

Water is not only important to keep you hydrated, it also ensures better concentration and mental alertness. Try to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.

  • Eat healthy snacks

Healthy snacks like fruits, nuts, yogurt, and cheese are all great options to have when you’re feeling sleepy. Keep some near your desk or in your workplace so you can snack on them when you’re feeling sluggish.

  • Listen to energising music like pop and rock

Music is a great way to stay energized, especially songs with upbeat tempos. An added advantage is that they’re beneficial as a stress reliever. So plug those earphones in and rock on!
