Living a healthier life should be everyone’s goal, either a diet change or getting on an exercise regimen, making changes is beneficial for us in the long run.

If you’ve haven’t heard of crossfit, it’s a good way to start a healthier lifestyle as it incorporates effective exercise and better nutrition for your body. Not only would you have an improved health, you’ll be able to lose weight too.

When it comes to exercising, do you know that energy drinks can be a good partner? Other than providing an energy surge, it can also improve your physical performance and muscle recovery.

Now that you’ve signed up for your crossfit sessions, you’ll need to find a good energy drink to pair it with? Well then, continue reading on.

Energy drinks and crossfit

Energy drinks can be beneficial for crossfit due to its ingredient contents. 

Caffeine and sugar makes up most of an energy drink, providing energy boosting properties for you as you go on your crossfit journey.

There’s also other ingredients in energy drinks that are catered to the exercise masses. Taurine, creatine and BCAAs are not commonly present in many energy drinks but if they are, that could be your choice of energy drink for crossfit.

Taurine helps with muscle fatigue and also stabilizing your body’s temperature during exercise. 

With these ingredients present, energy drinks can aid your physical performance.

Is it OK to consume caffeine for crossfit?

Yes, it’s okay to consume caffeine for crossfit. 

Other than caffeine being a wake up beverage, it can also be used to enhance our physical performance naturally. This is because caffeine can reduce fatigue and raise heart rate and blood flow to muscles. In a way, caffeine can keep you focus on your crossfit regimen.

Caffeine can also enhance your endurance when it comes to physical activities by delaying the depletion of muscle glycogen. In crossfit, endurance is key.

Did you also know that caffeine can reduce the pain that comes with a workout. A previous study showed that consuming caffeine before working out can reduced the pain and muscle soreness by almost half.

Is it OK to consume sugar for crossfit?

You should cut sugar out if you’re doing crossfit. 

Going on a crossfit regimen doesn’t only include the workout section but also your dietary intake. This include incorporating meat, vegetables, nuts and seeds, fruits, lesser starch and no sugar. 

Sugar causes inflammation which can speed down post-workout recovery.

Anyway, sugar is generally unhealthy whether you’re doing crossfit or not, you should be mindful of your sugar intake.

Can I drink energy drinks for crossfit?

Yes, you can drink energy drinks for crossfit, with that said, you should choose your energy drinks wisely.

It’ll be good to choose ones with a good amount of caffeine, suitable to your caffeine tolerance. Consuming too much caffeine can cause you side effects which could hinder your workout.

Also, since you should cut down on sugar, try opting for sugar free energy drinks. There are a ton of energy drinks nowadays that are sugar free.

What to drink for a crossfit workout?


An energy drink. Drinking caffeine prior to a workout can boost your energy levels and fire you up. Ideally you should consume it 45 minutes prior to your crossfit, in order for it to metabolize first and you can reap the best of it when you begin.


You’ll be sweating and losing body fluid during crossfit, thus it’ll be good to hydrate with water on the go. During this time you should stay away from energy drinks as it’s diuretic thus would only draw out more water from you.


It’ll be good to rehydrate further especially if you didn’t drink any water during your workout. Once you’re well hydrated, you can grab another energy drink. The caffeine in energy drink can not only boost back the energy you’ve lost but also help replenish muscle glycogen at a faster rate. 

Should crossfitters take creatine?

Creatine can be beneficial for muscle mass and strength, which is what you’ll need for crossfit.

Creatine isn’t a banned substance for athletes, so you could consume creatine if you need to supplement your workout.

If you didn’t know, Bang Energy Drink contains “super creatine” a derivative from creatine, which makes it popular among people who workout.

Can Bang Energy Drink really help you with your workout? 

BCAAs and crossfit

Branch-chain-amino-acids or BCAAs are essential amino acids when it comes to exercising. It helps build muscles and strengthening them for endurance, which is a big part of high intensity exercises like crossfit.

You can consume BCAAs pre or while working out to avoid muscle catabolism and BCAAs are also found in certain energy drinks that are targeted at people who value fitness.

As with creatine too, the amount of BCAAs in energy drink doesn’t seem substantial and might be geared more towards a marketing scheme.

Can I drink Red Bull Energy Drink for crossfit?

Yes, you can drink Red Bull Energy Drink for crossfit. 

I think the 80mg of caffeine is a suitable amount as I personally like my caffeine dosages to be less than 100mg. However, Red Bull does contain 27g of sugar, an amount that it’s quite high and you should keep away from sugar in your diet.

You could opt for Red Bull Total Zero, even if you’re not doing crossfit.

Best energy drink for crossfit

Celsius Energy Drink

If you need a high dosage of caffeine for the day, you could try Celsius Energy Drink. You can choose either 200mg or 300mg of caffeine, depending on what you need. Although you really shouldn’t be consuming way too much caffeine prior to crossfit.

Celsius also “promises” to increase metabolism and reduce body fat, it could be an advantage to your workout too.

I personally am not a fan of the high content of caffeine Celsius carries but the fact that it has zero sugar is a thumbs up from me.

Instead of carrying cans of energy drink the gym, maybe just carry a tube of energy drink along with you? I’m sure there are water coolers there so you could easily mix your own energy drink.
