We can’t survive without our brain but sometimes our brain can’t seem to cooperate with us. Therefore we have to supplement our brain.
Some turn to exercising in order to wake the brain up, others (like me) turn to caffeine.
Whether we go for a morning jog, or need a can of energy drink to begin our day, you’re not in this alone.

Caffeine is a natural stimulant that isn’t only found in food like chocolates or beverages like coffee or energy drinks, and it’s also used as medication.
Many are quite dependent on caffeine in order to kickstart brain functions, and that includes me.
According to studies, only 75mg of caffeine is needed to increase attention and alertness. More caffeine can improve memory and reasoning too.
I personally reach for a moderate dosage of caffeine every day. It’s usually coffee in the morning and a good energy drink after lunch hours.
A healthy adult is recommended a daily caffeine intake of up to 400mg. More than that might trigger unwanted side effects.
Other than that, your caffeine tolerance also plays a part. If you have a lower tolerance, maybe 100mg would cause you a headache, and sadly that’s not gonna help your brain functions.
Sugar and brain function
We all know that sugar is generally unhealthy, other than weight gain and the sluggish feel we get upon a sugar-crash, sugar also affects our brain negatively.
Funny enough although sugar can give us the surge of energy we need, it can also cause our attention span, short-term memory and mood to go haywire.
Sugar too is in a way addictive, which is why we crave for it despite not needing it. Sugar also has inflammatory properties that can cause brain inflammation which contributes to depression.
But don’t worry, moderate amounts of sugar are still permissible for you. The recommended daily sugar intake for women is 25g (6 teaspoons) and men is 37.5g (9 teaspoons).
If you’re leading an active lifestyle, the sugar you consume would probably be burned off. An active lifestyle also promotes good brain function.
Are energy drinks good for your brain?
Yes, energy drinks can be good for your brain.
Energy drinks are designed to give you energy, which would help you with alertness and other brain functions.
Other than caffeine and sugar being the main ingredients, most energy drinks have added vitamins, amino acids and herbal extracts, which is beneficial for your brain.
This however doesn’t mean you should start chugging cans of energy drinks, remember too much of a good thing won’t be good for you.
How do energy drinks affect your brain?
The caffeine in energy drinks mimics adenosine, our “sleep chemical”, which is why energy drinks can keep us awake as caffeine has taken the place of adenosine, thus we won’t be feeling sleepy.
Other than that, caffeine too triggers neurons and engages our pituitary gland into a “fight or flight” response, which keeps us alert.
This is why if we consume an energy drink with too much caffeine, we won’t be able to get a good night’s sleep and also we’ll be kept on our toes and anxious.
Do energy drinks affect your memory?
Yes, energy drinks can positively affect our memory.
A previous study conducted proved that Red Bull Energy Drink benefited brain stimulation of 24 participants, including their memory.
The ingredients including caffeine, sugar and others work well together to stimulate our brain. Cheers to this finding!
Energy drinks for concentration
Undeniably, energy drinks can work well for your concentration. If you predict yourself about to doze off in a 3pm meeting, might be a good choice to grab an energy drink beforehand.
In order to concentrate well, try opting for an energy drink with a moderate amount of caffeine. Too much caffeine intake can send you bouncing off the wall, which would backfire your initial plan.

The contents in energy drinks can reduce mental fatigue, which usually occurs when you don’t have enough sleep. I know, there are just days that you have to function on no sleep, thus energy drinks can help you survive the day.
Even though energy drinks can keep you awake, not getting enough sleep is never a good idea. Your brain ultimately needs to recharge while sleeping not fueled by energy drinks alone.
Only grab energy drinks when you need a pick me up.

Which population uses their brains the most? Yes, students, I didn’t forget about you.
Going from one class to another, calls for an energy drink to help your brain absorb the best lectures.
Or you might also need energy drinks to keep you up studying late into the night. Not only can energy drinks keep you from dozing off on your textbooks, it can also perk your brain and improve cognitive functions.

It has the ability to increase attention while keeping you calm, unlike how coffee can make you feel a bit jittery.

Best part of it all, green tea’s caffeine content is very minimal thus allowing us to still get a good night’s rest.
• Yerba Mate
I’m not sure if you’re familiar with Yerba Mate, it’s a South American traditional tea, which contains a good amount of caffeine in it, about 85mg per 8 ounces, more than the usual tea caffeine content.
We’ve established that caffeine can definitely help with brain functions, which is why Yerba Mate is a good brain stimulator. Also, Yerba Mate’s caffeine doesn’t give you the side effects you get after a cup of coffee or a can of energy drink.
That’s a thumbs up from me.
Does water increase brain power?
Yes, water does increase your brain power.
You might be astounded by this revelation especially since there’s no “extra ingredients” in water.
Believe it or not, dehydration can actually cause you to be less energized and reduce your brain function. Just by a 2% dehydration, you are already losing alertness and memory.
This is why staying hydrated is super important especially after losing fluid to sweat.
So after this, if you feel a bit sluggish, maybe try a glass of water first before grabbing a caffeine fix.
Does Red Bull improve brain functions?
Yes, Red Bull can improve your brain functions. A previous study has proven that a can of Red Bull increased concentration and memory by 24%.
A 8.4 fl. oz can of Red Bull Energy Drink has 80mg of caffeine, this is an ideal amount of caffeine to help your brain without over stimulating it.
Red Bull does however have 27g of sugar and 110 calories. These contents are in amounts not favorable to me cause I know for sure there are other healthier options of energy drinks that can help with my brain functions just fine.
If you do still want Red Bull, maybe try Red Bull Total Zero (yes, you guessed it, zero sugar and calories).
Is it OK to drink energy drinks daily?
Yes, it’s okay to drink energy drinks on a daily basis, if you choose wisely.
First and foremost, it’s wise to stick to the 400mg of caffeine per day, that’s a safe amount, more of it might hazardous. So if you choose to drink Bang Energy Drink (which has 300mg of caffeine), you’re pretty much only limited to 1 can a day.
Also, try to choose an energy drink with little to none sugar and calories. That’s an advantage or your health in the long run.
Lastly, don’t mix energy drinks with alcohol. No matter how that’s normalized at parties and bars, it’s not a safe drink mix. Trust me on this.
Best energy drinks for brain
Celsius Energy Drink
Who’s up for a great caffeine boost? Celsius Energy Drink has 3 different categories. Celsius “Originals” and “Naturals” are filled with 200mg of caffeine, while Celsius “Heat” contains a hefty 300mg, placing it as one of the strongest energy drink.
Although large quantities of caffeine isn’t my cup of tea, it might be what you need. Just be mindful of your daily intake and tolerance so that it will help you with brain functions and not get you in a rut.

Guru Energy Drink
Guru Energy Drink has 100mg of caffeine said to be derived from guarana seed and green tea leaf extract. It’s also marketed as a healthier option, with echinacea flower extract and panax ginseng root extract.
If you’re into a healthier option, you might want to try Guru out. However, Guru does contain 21g of sugar, which is said to be derived from cane syrup and white grape juice concentrate.
I’ll let you be the judge of that.

Here’s a sugar free option with lesser caffeine. XS Energy Drink has 80mg of caffeine for an 8.4 fl. oz can.
I kinda like XS for its moderate caffeine, which can help me get by easily, but the price point is on the pricier side, costing about $3 – $4.
