Best energy drink to keep you awake (don’t doze off!)Be it in the morning, or hitting that mid-day low, we can’t afford power naps, so we turn to energy drinks to keep us awake. 

I find energy drinks very useful in that sense, and it’s cheaper than my usual Starbucks order. Talk about saving money! 

Here are some tips and tricks to finding the perfect energy drink to keep you awake. 

What to look for in energy drinks?

Caffeine

Caffeine is the main component of energy drinks, it’s what gives the energy boosting effect. 

When you’re thinking of drinking an energy drink to keep you awake, it’s best to find one with a good caffeine amount suitable to your tolerance. 

If you drink an energy drink with a high amount of caffeine, you might get some side effects that would disrupt your day ahead. 

Yup, a higher caffeine dosage can keep you awake longer but you shouldn’t overdose on caffeine, and remember to keep to the recommended caffeine limit of 400mg daily. 

Sugar

Sugar too gives you energy and most energy drinks have a crazy high amount of sugar. 

Too much sugar is generally unhealthy and thankfully many energy drinks in the market now are zero sugar. 

Guarana

Guarana isn’t present in all energy drinks, but if it is, guarana adds to the caffeine component in energy drinks. Therefore, if you would like a better caffeine boost, you might want an energy drink with added guarana. 

However, 1g of guarana equals to 40mg of caffeine, so be sure to check the amount first as usually caffeine from guarana isn’t accounted for in the total caffeine count.

Does caffeine keep me awake?

Yes, caffeine can keep you awake. Caffeine works by changing how our brain reacts to sleep.

When adenosine acts in our brain, it causes drowsiness and slows down our activity. Then, when we consume caffeine, caffeine takes the place of adenosine, which would then suppress the feeling of fatigue and sleepiness. 

Caffeine also stimulates our brain which is why we’re able to focus better after consuming caffeinated beverages. 

How long does caffeine keep me awake?

There is no definite answer to this, it totally depends on how your body reacts to caffeine

Caffeine’s effects kicks in immediately, and it peaks around 45 minutes after consumption. Caffeine also has a half life of about 5 hours, so the more caffeine you consume, the longer its effects are on you. 

That’s also dependable on your caffeine tolerance. If you’re more sensitive towards caffeine, you most probably would be kept awake longer. I know people that can drink caffeine before bed time and still get a good sleep – guess their tolerance is really high. 

Does sugar keep me awake? 

Sugar doesn’t keep you awake, but it gives you a surge of energy that can prevent you from feeling sleepy temporarily – in order words, sugar rush. 

With sugar rush, comes a sugar crash. This means your sugar has been used up and now your body is slowly shutting down, which will leave you sluggish, not beneficial in keeping you awake. 

So, you might want to pay attention to your sugar intake in cases when you want to keep awake. 

Can energy drinks keep me awake?  

Yes, energy drinks can keep you awake. 

It’ll be good to choose energy drinks with suitable caffeine and sugar content, as too much can prove to not be helpful in keeping you awake. 

Are energy drinks good for an all-nighter? 

Yes, energy drinks can be good for an all-nighter as energy drinks can keep you awake be it if you need to work OT or study all night. 

Other than depending on caffeinated beverages, you could also try other ways to keep you awake all night, like taking a nap. A nap or a short rest before you continue your task, can freshen you up. 

Also, try to keep away from carbs or sugary items, that would cause a sugar-crash which would leave you sluggish afterwards. 

Does Red Bull help to stay awake? 

Yes, Red Bull can help you to stay awake. 

An 8.4 fl. oz can of Red Bull energy drink contains 80mg of caffeine. A moderate amount suitable to keep you awake. 

However, Red Bull also contains 27g of sugar, which means a sugar crash could be heading your way which could hinder you from staying awake. 

You could try Red Bull Total Zero instead or opt for other energy drinks out there. 

How long does it take for Red Bull to kick in?

The effects of Red Bull kicks in almost immediately. You’ll be able to feel an increase in heart rate and blood pressure in the first 10 minutes of consumption.

Around 45 minutes later, you’ll be most awake, fully energized and alert. An hour or so later, your energy levels has reached its peak and soon your energy will start to deplete. 

Which energy drink is most effective? 

The effectiveness of an energy drink is dependent on the caffeine content. 

A stronger caffeine content can potentially keep you awake better but it’s also dependent on your caffeine tolerance. 

If you can’t tolerate caffeine well, too much caffeine in an energy drink can give you the side effects, like jitters or headaches. Those can cause you discomfort and might backfire the reason you’re keeping awake for. 

I personally find energy drinks with less than 100mg of caffeine to be effective for me and enables me to get through my tasks while keeping me awake.

Which energy drinks keep you awake the longest?

Energy drinks with a higher caffeine content can potentially keep you awake longer. 

There are energy drinks in the market with up to 500mg of caffeine, that’s a whole lot too excessive in my opinion.

Can energy drinks keep me awake while driving? 

Yes, energy drinks can help keep you awake while driving. 

Not only that, grabbing a can of energy drink can actually help you focus better on the road and be more alert to road conditions and other road users. 

What other drinks can help me stay awake? 

Other than energy drinks, there are also other drinks that you can take to help you stay awake. 

Since we have been talking about caffeine, of course coffee is helpful to keep you awake. The caffeine content in coffee also varies depending on type of coffee.

• black coffee: 70 – 140 mg of caffeine

• espresso: 63mg of caffeine

• instant coffee: 30 – 90 mg of caffeine

• decaf coffee: 0 – 7 mg of caffeine

If you want less caffeine, maybe you can try green tea. Green tea is able to provide you the energy you need, in a subtle way without sending you over the top. And best of all, you can get a good sleep after that. 

Best energy drinks to keep you awake 

Celsius Energy Drink

Celsius Energy Drink (Originals and Naturals) contains 200mg of caffeine, quite a high content but could be suitable for you if you’ve a higher caffeine tolerance. 

I also like the fact that it’s zero sugar, so you can worry not about any sugar crashes. 

If you need a stronger caffeine dosage, Celsius Heat Energy Drink has 300mg of caffeine. That’s a lot and places it among one of the strongest energy drinks

Be warned, with great caffeine comes great side effects too.

NOS Energy Drink 

NOS Energy Drink has 160mg of caffeine, which in my opinion is on the average level, though I would prefer a lesser amount. 

However, the sugar content is way over the top with 53g of sugar. I can already imagine the sugar rush that’s creeping up. 

This might be a good option for you if you need the energy boost to keep awake for maybe an hour before the sugar crash comes crashing in.
