5 minutes with athlete George Gwynn
We caught up with triathlete and REIZE legend George Gwynn to have a chat about training, competing, motivational tips and partying hard. Keep an eye out for this guy, he’s destined for great things.
Hi George, tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m a 22-year-old university student competing in triathlon from New Zealand. If I'm not racing or training I enjoy getting out on the ski boat with friends or in the winter I love to go up the hill and hit the slopes.
Where did you grow up?
Ever since I can remember I have lived in Hamilton. It’s been great. It’s nice and central to everywhere. It has great training and is also less than two hours to the mountains and lakes for skiing and wake boarding.
Sounds like a cracking place. What sports do you compete in?
Being a triathlete I have to race three disciplines. But in the winter when the season is over I race running and cycling races by themselves to get some good quality fast training in. I really enjoy Mountain Biking and am doing a lot of races in the build up to cross tri worlds in September.
What inspired you to start in those sports?
When I was younger I played rugby and had never done a running or cycling race until I had left school. I watched the triathlon on the Olympics in London and thought it looked like a bit of me so I started and straight away got hooked.
What sporting achievements are you most proud of?
I was very proud the first time I was selected in the New Zealand Age Group team to compete at the world championships in London in 2013 after only a few months of training and only a handful of triathlons. I was also very proud when I completed my first half ironman last year. I now have my sights set on some day racing as a pro
Top effort mate. Are you currently competing solo, or as part of a team?
Triathlon is a solo sport but we have a great crew based out of Hamilton all under the same coach racing as team G-Force
Tell us about a time when you had to overcome adversity?
When racing in London in 2013 I crashed on the bike leg. It seriously messed up my bike but I got up and finished the race. I hadn't travelled across the world to not finish my race! After my crash I finished 27th in the World for my age group.
Ouch, nasty. We’re impressed by your motivation. What are your top 3 tips for staying motivated?
Goals are hugely important. If you have a reason to get out of bed in the morning and you know why you are getting up and spending hours in the pool or on the bike it makes things a lot easier!
What is your favourite motivational quote?
I don't have a favourite quote as such but I have a video that I go to if I’m ever looking for that extra bit of motivation.
What about nutrition? Are you a healthy eater? What are your top 3 nutrition tips?
Being an athlete nutrition is hugely important! But also at the moment as a student it’s hard to fit in training and preparing good food so I'm not that great with my everyday nutrition! Racing and training are easier but equally as important, especially with the longer races. In a sprint triathlon which is all over in around an hour nutrition doesn't really play a huge roll as you don't need that much fuel to keep you going. But when you get into half ironman races which are in excess of 4 hours nutrition is key and it can be the difference between having a great race or a bad day at the office. It really comes down to practice and knowing what you need to keep your body running. You need to train your body to use the fuel, there is no point changing the routine or plan and mixing things up on race day you need to learn what works and what doesn't.
You’re dead right mate, it is so important. What events do you have coming up?
I have a mountain bike racing series coming up over the next three months, and then it’s my biggest races of the year that I'm focusing on. The ITU cross tri world champs in Sardinia and then the ITU Duathlon world champs in Adelaide. Then I am going to focus on the longer distance racing Ironman 70.3 and eventually full Ironman in 2017.
Good luck in those events, not that luck has anything to do with it. So what was it that attracted you to REIZE?
I love the way that it’s so easy to use and so easy to take with you. All you need is water and you have an energy drink! With training for so many hours a week and having Uni work too it’s hard sometimes to get in the mood to go out and train. But with REIZE it gives you the boost you need to get up and go.
